Six new and archival soundtracks made up La-La Land's celebrated Black Friday batch this year, including continuations of several of the label's riessue series and the creation of a new one!
The label continues its ongoing individual expansions of Bill Conti's scores to The Karate Kid series with a new pressing of the score to the third film in the series. Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and director John G. Avildsen again reunited for a slightly redundant story in which Daniel and Mr. Miyagi are again challenged by the disgraced Cobra Kai dojo. Conti's inspiring score was a bright spot, and it's on display here like never before - featuring 16 unreleased alternate cues not featured on previous pressings. Neil S. Bulk produces this edition, with mastering by Doug Schwartz; it's limited to 3000 copies.
La-La Land's big project in the batch is the first two entries in a new series chronicling Jerry Goldsmith's work as a composer for films distributed by 20th Century Fox. Goldsmith at 20th "will feature new authoritative liner notes and unified packaging sure to please avid collectors but also serve as a perfect gateway for listeners experiencing this music for the first time." The first, 2CD volume covers a pair of '60s war films based on novels: Von Ryan's Express, starring Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard as Allied POWs on the run in German-ocupied territory during World War II; and The Blue Max, featuring George Peppard as a driven young German pilot during World War I. The second volume, on one disc, features scores to a different pair of films based on novels: The Detective, a hardboiled NYPD detective drama again starring Sinatra (fun fact: author Roderick Thorp wrote a sequel to The Detective later adapted into a very different Fox action film called Die Hard); and The Flim-Flam Man, a folksy comedy starring George C. Scott as a con artist. Each release is co-produced by Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk with liner notes by Jeff Bond and package design by Jim Titus. Daniel Hersch masters everything except The Flim-Flam Man, overseen by Joe Taranto; both units are limited to 2000 copies.
Next up is a gripping new release in the Universal Pictures Film Music Classics Collection: a 30th anniversary, double-disc expansion of the score to the cult horror flick Tremors. Kevin Bacon leads an ensemble cast (including Michael Gross and country singer Reba McEntire as a survivalist couple) that encounter a mysterious species of subterranean worms called "Graboids" in a sleepy Nevada town. The film spawned six direct-to-video sequels (most recently this fall's Shrieker Island) and a 2003 television series, all of which starred Gross. This premiere release of the score by Ernest Troost and Police Academy composer Robert Folk (whose works respectively grace each disc of the set) is produced and mastered by Matessino, with design by Dan Goldwasser and liner notes by Zach Tow, featuring new commentary from both composers and director Ron Underwood. It tops out at 3000 copies.
The new title in the Black Friday batch is Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreary's score to this fall's Freaky. A slasher-comedy from horror studio Blumhouse, Freaky follows Vince Vaughn as a serial killer whose spirit unintentionally switches bodies with a teen girl he intended to kill. This one's limited to just 1000 units!
LLL's Black Friday bonanza ends with a long-awaited fourth volume in their ongoing series of Mark Snow's soundtracks to The X-Files. This limited edition 4CD set, limited to 2000 units, is a grab bag of cues from the sci-fi series' original run between 1993 and 2002, featuring cues from all nine seasons and even 1998's feature film X-Files: Fight the Future. Snow and Mike Joffe co-produce, with James Nelson handling mastering and a 42-page book of liner notes written by Randall Larson and designed by Mark Banning.

Daniel Maher says
I wish someone would release Bill Conti's score to the pilot episode of "Dynasty", it's a lush score in the tradition of Max Steiner including a leitmotif for each of the main characters
Eddie says
Speaking of Bill Conti, there needs to be a release of the complete score from The Right Stuff as there are still some good tracks that are unreleased.
