No matter the season, it seems like archival film scores are always in style! The last few weeks have seen some killer announcements from La-La Land, Varese Sarabande and Intrada - offering expansions of some action/adventure scores from the '80s, '90s and '00s, plus a terrific new soundtrack reissue of one of the best scores in the James Bond series.
La-La Land Records promised a "remastered edition" of John Barry's score to On Her Majesty's Secret Service in a recent Variety piece - and it's now been confirmed that the label has prepped a brilliant expansion of the music! The sixth Bond film was Barry's fifth score for the series, but the first (and only) performance by Australian model George Lazenby, making his acting debut as Ian Fleming's literary secret agent. One of the more emotional stories in the series, OHMSS pitted Bond against the villainous Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas) and had 007 enter a star-crossed romance with a mysterious countess (Diana Rigg). Barry's score was anchored by a new, riveting instrumental title theme that would become part of the Bond canon, and also featured the stirring "We Have All the Time in the World," a love theme written with lyricist Hal David that offered one of the last vocal performances by legendary jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong.
An unreleased film version with Armstrong's vocal is featured on the new 2CD version of the Majesty's score, packed with quality material including a new transfer of the score from three-track 1/2" stereo masters. (Two tracks have been pulled from the mono film stems and given stereo processing.) The score presentation is coupled with a new edit and mix of the original soundtrack LP and additional unreleased cues. La-La Land's Bond dream team is once again on hand for this release: Neil S. Bulk is the album's producer/mixer, Doug Schwartz is mastering engineer, Chris Malone engineered the mono stem tracks, and Dan Goldwasser designed the package (featuring a new cover by Jim TItus and liner notes that include an in-depth essay by Jon Burlingame and a note from David Arnold, who composed five Bond scores between 1997 and 2008). The set is limited to 5000 copies.
Also coming from LLL are two revisited scores from another series of espionage novels turned into films: Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan stories. The Hunt for Red October, the 1984 novel that introduced the quick-thinking CIA analyst, was adapted into a film in 1990 that starred Alec Baldwin as Ryan, working to avoid a confrontation between the U.S. Navy and a rogue Soviet submarine captain portrayed by Sean Connery. One of the highest-grossing films of the year, Red October featured a stirring score by Basil Poledouris (Conan the Barbarian, RoboCop), combining orchestra, chorus and electronics in full measure. Though previously generously expanded by Intrada in 2013, that presentation was sourced from backup masters on analog tape. For this 35th anniversary release, access was granted to the original scoring masters for a new mix, which also revealed a further 16 alternate takes or mixes never copied over. Those, along with the original soundtrack album presentation, are offered on the back half of the 2CD set. Neil S. Bulk and Dan Goldwasser (who also designed the package) co-produce this abum, mixed and mastered by Chris Malone with liner notes by Jeff Bond. It's limited to 3000 copies.
After two further Jack Ryan films in the '90s, both starring Harrison Ford, the series was rebooted to feature a younger (but contemporary) version of the character, this time played by Ben Affleck in a loose adaptation of Clancy's The Sum of All Fears. This 2002 film was one of the last major action pictures scored by Jerry Goldsmith, who brings his usual dazzling patriotic flair to the proceedings (along with vocal interpretations of his themes on the Yolanda Adams-sung "If We Could Remember," with lyrics by Paul Williams). Slightly expanded and remixed from its original expansion by La-La Land in 2014, this 2CD set also now adds a new remastered edition of the original soundtrack album, which featured alternate takes and edits of some cues. Neil S. Bulk again co-produces with Goldsmith's longtime engineer Bruce Botnick, who offers his mixing and mastering skills. Dan Goldwasser once again designs and Jeff Bond updates his previous liner notes, in a set limited to 3000 copies.
Varese Sarabande dials it back to 2002 for two very different expanded scores by two celebrated composers. The label first expands John Debney's action-packed score to The Scorpion King. This blockbuster action picture starred wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in an early role, reprising his debut role of the villain in the previous year's sequel The Mummy Returns - this time as an antihero, set more than two millennia before his appearance in that period film. Debney, picking up the series' baton from Goldsmith and Alan Silvestri, hones the action scoring skills that made him the highlight of would-be blockbusters like Cutthroat Island (1995), combining rousing orchestral ideas with exotic non-Western instrumentation and even some blazing electric guitar for flavor. This 2CD set offers an expanded presentation of Debney's score alongside a selection of demos, with new notes by Daniel Schweiger that feature insight into the score from the composer himself. Varese also offers an expansion of Hans Zimmer's score to Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men, a comedy-drama adaptation about a neurotic con man (Nicolas Cage) whose life changes when he meets the daughter he never knew he had (Alison Lohman). Scott and Zimmer had worked together five times before - including Scott's last three films (2000's Gladiator and the 2001 films Black Hawk Down and Hannibal) - but Matchstick Men marked their final team-up, and it sounds like Kaya Savas' liner notes (featuring a Q&A with the composer) might get into why.
Finally, Intrada has prepped a few '80s reissues and expansions alongside one Silver Age classic of scoring. They've reissued Bruce Broughton's stirring score to Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) - a remaster by Chris Malone of their most recent presentation of the score from 2019 (featuring a complete assembly from Eric Tomlinson's original mixes, a selection of alternates and a remaster of the original soundtrack LP) that's got a new cover design by Stéphane Coëdel. They've next prepared the first-ever release of Ernest Gold's score to 1961's The Last Sunset, a Western starring Kirk Douglas (fresh off Spartacus) as a wanted murderer pursued on a cattle drive by a dogged sheriff (Rock Hudson). Mike Matessino has restored this score for CD release from Universal's original master tapes; Frank K. DeWald has penned liner notes in a package designed by Coedel. Finally, Intrada has expanded Jerry Goldsmith's memorable score to 1982's The Secret of NIMH, former Disney animator Don Bluth's directorial debut. This presentation from producer Chris Malone reinstates eight minutes of missing music, sourced from audio stems of the original 35mm film stored in the MGM vaults and blended with the remainder of the original score sources; it also includes a reconstruction of the original soundtrack album as Goldsmith assembled it.

I’ve managed to get some of the 007 titles from the 007 store here in the UK, but there must be someone this side of the soup distributing other LLL titles.
Bloody expensive business this
