Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.

Totally agree there.the thing what gets me about this resurgence in all things vinyl.when the big record companies couldn’t wait to ditch the format in favour of new tech i.e.cds.i’m not here to argue the toss between sound quality vinyl v cd.i’m not ditching cds for vinyl albums that i bought first time around.x

Is there something special with the Brothers in arms or the other Dire Straits? New master or something?

If not, I didn’t get the point of this releases.

    Thanks.
Great site by the way. Discovered it a few weeks ago. Great work, kepp it up.

Nothing special. They just make them so people buy them.
Only good thing about 180gm vinyl is less prone to warping during shipping.
Unless noted, many of these are cut from digital sources or a previous master.
Rhino isn’t going to cut something from original master tapes if they’re only releasing 5000 (or fewer) copies. If they do they’ll press up more for RSD.

Bleh…..hard pass. I was just talking w a friend the other day about how I missed the glory days of Rhino when they released so many great series like Have a Nice Day, Just Can’t get Enough New Wave Hits, and so many others. Would look so forward to those and I still play them all to this day. And all the great box sets. I wish they would get back to those but I guess the market is not there now.

The Talking Heads back catalogue needs a major overall. There need to new remasters on cd/digital/lp with better audio than those loud 2005 dual discs. Along with all the 7″/12″ mixes on a complete career retrospective.
