Matthew Sweet, Catspaw (Omnivore) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Matthew Sweet returns with his latest studio album, and the power-pop hero is in full one-man-band mode. For this self-produced and self-engineered LP recorded in his home studio pre-COVID, Sweet sang all of the vocals and played guitar, bass and piano; he's joined only by longtime collaborator Ric Menck on drums for this guitar-heavy set emphasizing both tasty songwriting and ear-opening solos. It's a harder-rocking and somewhat darker set than some fans might be expecting, but still characterized by Sweet's bold melodies, sharp playing, and pop songcraft. Available on black vinyl, limited blue vinyl, and digital download directly via Omnivore's webstore.

Fwiw, the Wilbert Harrison collection does not include 'Let's Work Together,' his remake of his own 'Let's Stick Together,' which does appear here. (And yes, Canned Heat did 'Let's Work Together.')

Liberation Hall is putting out some interesting releases. Impressed that even in this day and age someone is still taking the effort to put out old VHS-only music titles on DVD! Kudos to them.

Maybe it's just me, but, oof, the new Matthew Sweet seems awfully expensive (especially for an album that is less than 40 minutes long).
