Demon Music Group has recently celebrated the career of Scottish singer Lulu with projects including 2018's Decade, a definitive chronicle of her first ten years in music. Now, Demon's Crimson Productions imprint is releasing the first comprehensive, career-spanning anthology for Lulu as part of its ongoing, budget-priced but music-packed Gold series.

Lulu's Gold volume encompasses a generous 60 songs on three CDs, and most significantly, is cross-licensed to include tracks from her various label associations over the years.  The first disc covers the 1960s and her tenures at Decca and the U.K. Columbia label, including such hits as "Shout," "Here Comes the Night," "Leave a Little Love," "Try to Understand," "Me, the Peaceful Heart," "I'm a Tiger," "Boom Bang-a-Bang," and the international smash "To Sir with Love."  All of Lulu's charted U.K. singles from this period are featured here.

The second disc of Gold begins with Lulu's sojourn to the U.S. Atlantic Records label with eight selections spanning late 1969 through 1972.  Among these selections are "Melody Fair," co-written by Lulu's then-husband Maurice Gibb, and "Oh Me, Oh My (I'm a Fool for You Baby)" produced by Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin, and Jerry Wexler at Muscle Shoals in Alabama.  The latter southern soul-infused cut gave Lulu her third-biggest U.S. hit ever.  This disc continues with the artist's 1973-1976 period at Chelsea Records, one which saw her collaborate with David Bowie to record his songs "The Man Who Saw the World" and "Watch That Man."  (Her Chelsea years were collected in full by Demon in 2017.)  Disc 2 concludes with rare cuts from Lulu's time on Elton John's Rocket label and on Alfa Records.  Most of this 1979-1981 material has never previously been available on CD, making its inclusion here particularly delightful.  "I Could Never Miss You More Than I Do," from Lulu's Rocket album Don't Take Love for Granted, became her fourth and final U.S. Top 40 hit when it peaked at an impressive No. 18.  It registered less strongly in the U.K., reaching No. 62.

The third and final disc begins with Lulu's cover of Chris Rea's "I Will Do It for Your Love" from her second album for Alfa, 1981's Take Me to Your Heart Again.  While the vocalist spent much of the 1980s away from the recording studio, she returned with a vengeance in the 1990s and is still recording today.  This disc brings her story up to date, including tracks from the Dome, Parlophone, RCA, Mercury, Globe, and Decca labels with numerous rare and dancefloor-ready mixes.  Highlights here include her 1993 U.K. No. 1 reinvention of Dan Hartman's "Relight My Fire" with Take That, a duet with Irish singer Ronan Keating on Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight," her interpretation of Jackie DeShannon's "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," and her own powerful 2015 rendition of "I Don't Wanna Fight," the song she co-wrote that became a chart-topping international hit for Tina Turner in 1993.
