Never Enough: 7a Reissues, Expands Micky Dolenz's "Demoiselle"

7a Records' debut release in 2015 was Micky Dolenz's The MGM Singles Collection, a lavish package (first on vinyl and then on expanded CD) collecting the singer and forever Monkee's early '70s output for the MGM family of labels.  7a has released a number of Dolenz titles over the years including his acclaimed new studio album Dolenz Sings Nesmith; on August 5, the label will return to his discography with an expanded reissue of 1998's Demoiselle.  The private-press CD was offered via mail order but never received wide distribution, making 7a's release all the more welcome. The new iteration of the album, coming on both CD and vinyl LP, has been resequenced and adds three previously unreleased bonus tracks.

The original nine-song album was assembled primarily from sessions helmed by producer Jerry Corbetta (Sugarloaf, The Four Seasons) and Dolenz between 1981 and 1992.  Dolenz wrote all of the material other than a live version of Buddy Johnson's "Since I Fell for You," the oft-covered pop standard recorded by such artists as Lenny Welch, Charlie Rich, and Al Jarreau.  The B.A. Robertson-produced "Beverly Hills" may be familiar from its appearance on Dolenz's 1982 Japan-only single release, included on Micky's Live in Japan from 7a in 2020.

Three of the Demoiselle tracks will also be well-known to longtime Monkees fans.  Micky recalled in 7a's announcement, "Nez and Peter and David came over to my house...I played them the [1992 demo] tracks, some of them, and some of those are the ones that ended up on [The Monkees' 1996 reunion album] Justus."  Those three songs are "Regional Girl," "Never Enough," and "Dyin' of a Broken Heart."  The new edition premieres the tracks "My Heart Is Failing Me" (written by Albert Hammond and Holly Knight), "Put a Hold on Your Heart" (Hammond and Graham Lyle), and "Torch for Hire" (O'Keefe/Braun).

The CD presentation includes a 32-page color booklet with new liner notes and rare photos, while the LP is housed in a gatefold sleeve and pressed on red vinyl.  In addition to being resequenced, Demoiselle now sports a new cover.  All audio has been newly remastered from the original tapes.

Micky Dolenz is keeping busy this year; he's got a number of tour dates scheduled both solo and with Felix Cavaliere's Rascals and is also anticipating 7a's reissue of both Dolenz, Jones, Boyce and Hart's albums on July 8.  Demoiselle is due from 7a on August 5.  You'll find pre-order links and the track listing below!
