June and July have brought with them a bonanza of archival soundtrack titles from three of the major film score reissue labels, covering some of the biggest names in the genre as well. Here's a rundown at the latest from Intrada, Varese Sarabande and La-La Land Records!
Intrada recently filled a gap in the work of the late contemporary composer James Horner (Aliens, Titanic, Avatar) with a premiere release of his work on the 1981 film Deadly Blessing. This picture about a series of possibly supernatural murders in a rural community, featured performances by Ernest Borgnine and a then little-known Sharon Stone - but it's perhaps best known as the third film by horror auteur Wes Craven. Though the picture matched neither the acclaim of Craven's previous works (The Last House on the Left (1972), The Hills Have Eyes (1977)) nor the commercial success of later '80s and '90s classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) or the first four Scream films (1996-2011), it has a devoted cult following and also remains an early stepping stone for Horner, fresh off early feature films Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) and Wolfen (1981) and a year from his breakthrough themes for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. His suspenseful score, heavy on strings and even choral passages, is presented for the first time in any format, sourced from the sole set of complete 1/4" stereo tape elements in Universal Pictures' archive. In addition to the full score, nine minutes of bonus material, including a trailer cue from a different composer, is included on the disc. This release features packaging by Kay Marshall that includes new liner notes by film music journalist Tim Grieving.
Over at Varese Sarabande's long-running CD Club, a pair of expanded scores from two lauded composers give multiple meanings of what it is to be a rat. The 1996 drama City Hall followed a blossoming scandal in the wake of a New York City shootout between a cop and a mobster, with Al Pacino and John Cusack playing the mayor and deputy mayor trying to uncover the truth. The legendary Jerry Goldsmith was tapped to score this suspenseful film, and his work is now presented as part of the CD Club on a new disc that combines the film's musical presentation, six alternate cues and the original album Varese issued more than 25 years ago. On a much less serious note, the CD Club also expands Alan Silvestri's score to the slapstick comedy Mouse Hunt (1997). Nathan Lane and Lee Evans play a pair of bumbling brothers set on inheriting a valuable mansion from their late father - if only they can get a pesky mouse off the premises. A favorite among fans of Silvestri (the lauded Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit composer), this deluxe edition more than doubles the length of Varese's original soundtrack album, presenting the complete score from the film.
Finally, from La-La Land Records comes a new series chronicling a sci-fi classic and an expansion of a recent action-comedy. The label has unveiled its first release in the Star Trek: The Original Series "1701 Collection," a planned six-volume series that will break out most of the music from the iconic series as heard in the label's sprawling 2012 box set. (Notable exceptions include scores originally released by the GNP Crescendo label and a few vocal tracks with challenging clearances.) Fans will have a second (or first!) chance to enjoy music from eight of the original Trek episodes as composed by Alexander Courage (who co-wrote the unforgettable theme) and Fred Steiner. The same audio sources from the Star Trek: The Original Series Soundtrack Collection - produced for release by Lukas Kendall, Neil S. Bulk and Jeff Bond; restored by Chris Malone and mastered by Doug Schwartz - will be carried over alongside expanded liner notes by Bond and new packaging by Dan Goldwasser at Warm Butter Design. Each release in the series will be limited to - you guessed it! - 1701 copies.
LLL has reissued several of British composer David Arnold's scores for the James Bond film series, and will next revisit his work on a slightly different film series: the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy! These comedy films, connected loosely by the British ice cream and the the creative team of actor/writer Simon Pegg and writer/director Edgar Wright, were first established with the uproarious zombie flick Shaun of the Dead (2004) and moved into high gear with 2007's Hot Fuzz, featuring Pegg and Shaun co-star Nick Frost in an over-the-top, action-packed buddy cop adventure set in a sleepy English village. Arnold's easy hand for scoring action comes in handy here, as the score - released in part digitally and on vinyl in the last few years - gets its most expansive edition yet, spread over two discs. It's produced and designed by Goldwasser, mastered by Schwartz and accompanied by new liner notes by Bond (featuring new quotes from Arnold). It's limited to 1500 copies.
You can find the track lists and pre-order links for all those releases below, ensuring a summer full of soundtracks if you're a film score fanatic!

Amusiclivwr says
I wish someone would release the frankly brilliant soundtrack to SG:U by Jerry Goldsmith, if I remember correctly. It's astonishing that it's unreleased, such amazing music.
