Cosmic rock doesn't get much more cosmic (or ambitious!) than Hawkwind's live album Space Ritual - and this month, it'll be expanded beyond all imagination in an epic 10CD/Blu-ray box set from Cherry Red and Atomhenge, the label responsible for the group's catalogue.
Space Ritual (50th Anniversary Edition) will feature the original, newly remastered 1973 double album as well as new mixes in stereo and surround by Stephen W. Tayler. Additionally, the box will feature Tayler's new mixes of the three live sets - recorded just before Christmas 1972 in Liverpool, Sunderland and Brixton, England - that formed the final product. A 68-page book inside the box includes new liner notes and a replica of the original program given to Space Ritual attendees.
Formed in 1968, Hawkwind gained prominence in the early '70s after the addition of several key members. By 1972, Dave Brock (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Nik Turner (vocals/saxophone/flute), Dave Anderson (bass/guitar) and Michael "Dik Mik" Davies (electronics) added drummer Simon King, South African vocalist/poet Robert Calvert and bassist/vocalist Lemmy Kilmister. While Lemmy is, of course, far better known today as the frontman of metal trio Motörhead, it was Hawkwind that first gave him exposure to British rock fans - as well as the first time he picked up a bass in the first place. Off the success of single "Silver Machine," a U.K. Top 5 hit, Hawkwind were an in-demand live draw, and created a set to match.
The Space Ritual show was based on songs from across the group's catalogue (including their most recent album, 1972's Doremi Fasol Latido) and a few new numbers, unified by a visually striking stage show conceptualized by Calvert and graphic designer Barney Bubbles. Featuring visual art and choreography by band associate Stacia Blake and lighting by respected U.K. designer Liquid Len, the set helped define Hawkwind as key figures in the burgeoning British progressive rock scene. The resulting album hit the U.K. Top 10 and even crossed over to the lower reaches of the Billboard 200 in America and remains one of the still-active group's most seminal works - hence this handsome set sure to appeal to faithful fans.
The box set is available September 29. On the same day, Atomhenge will release the original double album replicating the original packaging and pressed on transparent vinyl. A 2CD set of the album's new stereo remix will be available as well. Pre-order links and a full track list are below.
