The stockings are hung, the presents are wrapped, and the time is now to wish all of our readers at The Second Disc a wonderful holiday season before we enter a brief winter hibernation until the new year!
2023 was our 13th year as (we hope!) one of the more fun destinations for music reissues, box sets and catalogue releases. The business has certainly changed a lot in that time - maybe too much vinyl, maybe not enough CDs? - but labels big and small keep finding new, old and interesting ways to repackage great hits and archival material. Getting to hear and see fans lose their minds over a radical new Replacements remix, a "new" Beatles song, a deeply underrated John Williams score, an unheard Rick Springfield album, two box sets of legendary remixers, and so many treasures from Stax Records - all of that on its own would be brilliant; to get it in one year is magic.
And, as always, the Second Disc team has been honored to play a small part in the fun! Second Disc Records/Real Gone Music's collection devoted to Sylvester (re)introduced the disco legend to listeners new and old. Joe helped assemble not one but two collections devoted to The Spinners (a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee this year!), and helped get rarities from Rod McKuen to The Salsoul Orchestra back to the masses. (For the first time, Joe and Mike also collaborated on a catalogue title for the first time, reissuing Philip Bailey's Columbia albums in a set from SoulMusic Records/Cherry Red! This dynamic duo is ready to produce even more!)
As we look ahead to another hopefully exciting year of fine things to add to our music collections, we once again think of the most fun aspects of music fandom: finding songs and albums that move you, and sharing them with those you love. More than ever before, we feel 2024 will be a crucial time to keep sharing - a sentiment no doubt colored by the arrival of Mike's first children in a few short months!
From all of us to all of you, thank you for reading, commenting on and sharing our news and interviews, and sharing the gift of music with the ones you care about! We'll see you next year to do it all again.
-Mike & Joe
