Barbara Mandrell, Precious Memories (Gaither/Capitol Christian) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Gaither Music Group and Capitol Christian reissue country queen Barbara Mandrell's 1989 album Precious Memories: 20 Hymns and Gospel Classics on CD and digital formats. The double-record set was originally issued by the mail-order Heartland Music label, and heavily promoted on radio and television at the time. It was produced by Barbara's longtime collaborator Tom Collins who had helmed 19 albums and such hits for her as "Standing Room Only," "Sleeping Single in a Double Bed," "Years," and "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool." Precious Memories was an album close to the singer's heart as her second LP of gospel recordings following 1982's He Set My Life to Music. Recording at Nashville's Groundstar Laboratories, she was accompanied by such key players as "Nashville cat" David Briggs, Toto's David Hungate, the TCB Band's David Ogdin, Steppenwolf's Larry Byrom, and producer-arranger Shane Keister on the collection of 20 inspirational favorites, all rendered by Mandrell in heartfelt style. Tracks included "The Old Rugged Cross," "Peace in the Valley," "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," "Farther Along," and the title song. Read more here!
Nina Simone, Nina's Back (Verve/UMe) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Verve reissues Miss Simone's 1985 "comeback" album, recorded after her return from time spent in Barbados and Liberia, on CD, LP, and digital formats. The eclectic album includes Simone's adaptation of the Gershwins' and DuBose Heyward's "Porgy" as well as Bob Gaudio and Jake Holmes' "For a While" (written for Frank Sinatra's Watertown) and two of her own compositions, "I Sing Just to Know That I'm Alive" and "Fodder on Her Wings." New artwork replaces the original cover photograph of, well, Nina's back.
Doris Troy, Another Look (Omnivore) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Another Look collects rare singles and lost tracks recorded by the late, great Doris Troy in the mid-1970s to 1980, offering the most comprehensive chronicle yet of Troy's recording activities during this period. The 7" and 12" versions of the Midland/Midsong International material (produced by Artie Ripp and Philly disco maestro John Davis of The Monster Orchestra) are included alongside one track only released in the U.K.; a previously unreleased track from sessions produced by SoulMusic Records' David Nathan also debuts. Nathan also provides liner notes for this remastered package. Read more here.
