Bob Dylan had come a long way from coffeehouses. In 1974, the superstar singer-songwriter embarked on an extensive tour with his old backing band. Now, they, too, were universally known - as The Band - and the double bill hit indoor arenas across North America for 40 concerts over 30 dates and 21 cities. The tour became one of the largest and highest-profile of the era, in no small part due to the promotional efforts of David Geffen, who'd spurred on the talks and had recently lured Dylan away from Columbia Records to his own Asylum label. While Dylan's Asylum affiliation would be short-lived, the incendiary recordings from the tour have lived on thanks to the release of Before the Flood, the Platinum-certified live album. On September 20, Columbia and Legacy Recordings will release Bob Dylan and The Band's The 1974 Live Recordings, a 27-CD, 431-track box bringing together 133 professionally recorded tracks (all newly-mixed from 16-track tape) and every single surviving soundboard recording. In total, 417 of the 431 tracks are previously unreleased.
Dylan's Asylum debut Planet Waves, released in January 1974, reunited the artist with The Band (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel). With the Asylum publicity team cranked into overdrive, it became Dylan's first album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. With such strong material as "Forever Young," "Going, Going, Gone," and "On a Night Like This," it was clear the collaboration had inspired Dylan. The joint tour began in Chicago two weeks before the album's release, on January 3, 1974. It was Dylan's first full-length tour since 1966 and anticipation was high. The top ticket price was $9.50, and Geffen claimed that demand was so high that twenty tickets could have been sold for every one that was available. (That's even more notable considering the notoriously press-shy Dylan didn't engage in customary radio station appearances, and local news media cameras were barred from inside the venue.)
Though the songs were familiar, the arrangements were radically reworked by Dylan and The Band with a harder-rocking, even more intense edge suitable for arenas. Planet Waves songs initially appeared in the setlists, though by the tour's end, only "Forever Young" remained alongside the "classics." Beginning with the second show, the concert settled into a standard format: a six-song opening set performed by Dylan and The Band, followed by a five-song Band set, another three Dylan/Band "duets," a five-song Dylan acoustic set, a three-or-four song Band set, and the joint finale. Only the performances featuring Dylan are included on the upcoming box. The final concert on February 14 at the L.A. Forum in Inglewood, CA drew an expectedly starry crowd including Carole King, Warren Beatty, Ringo Starr, and Jack Nicholson.
In June 1974, Asylum released Before the Flood, documenting the show via performances recorded by Wally Heider's mobile truck at The Forum, plus one track ("Knockin' on Heaven's Door") from New York's Madison Square Garden. Rob Fraboni and Phil Ramone engineered. The double-album reached No. 3 in the U.S. and No. 8 in the U.K. and included both Band and Dylan songs. The Band's solo performances of such songs as "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" as heard on Before the Flood are not included on the box set.
For those looking for a smaller set drawn from the previously unreleased material, Legacy is teaming with Third Man Records for that label's Vault Package # 61, available only to subscribers of their Vault series. The 1974 Live Recordings: The Missing Songs from 'Before the Flood' promises to be the only vinyl issue of the archival tour recordings. It's pressed on 3-LP green vinyl at Third Man's plant in Detroit, and the package also includes a 7-inch single of "Blowin' in the Wind" (the recording from LA heard on Before the Flood) b/w "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)" from Madison Square Garden on January 30, 1974. A new, retro-style, 20-page, 8.5 x 11 souvenir book rounds out the package. Those interested must join the Vault club by July 31 at midnight CST to obtain a copy.

Gradese says
This is a very, very odd choice, to expunge all of the Band's songs... Meaning 7 - 8 songs per night...
And great songs, by the way.
Integral to the concerts.
Which makes for shorter sets that really do not represent those shows, AT ALL.
Eric Levy says
Agree 100%! The tour was legendary because it was Dylan AND The Band--as BEFORE THE FLOOD makes clear. I'll still get this, and kudos to the low price, but shame on them for leaving The Band's sets off this box. I definitely would have been happy to pay more for the complete concerts.
JG says
1) The Band were signed to Capitol, while Bob was on Columbia, so you’ve got a classic case of vying labels, especially because…
2) Given that the material turns 50 this year, the exhaustive 27-CD “every note played” approach suggests this is one of those copyright-protection releases, where they’re putting this out solely to keep bootleggers at bay (in the UK (or EU? can’t remember which), recordings automatically enter the public domain if they haven’t been officially released by the copyright holder within 50 years of the recording).
They’ve done this before with other late ‘60s / early ‘70s Bob recordings, and with this sort of release, they don’t care about reflecting the shows accurately, or the listener experience. It’s all about making sure they’re still the only ones who can make a buck off the material (regardless of whether they actually intend to capitalize on said material in a more traditional way).
I remember a similar thing with Pink Floyd a year or two ago; there was a TON (like two dozen maybe?) concert recordings of theirs from 1973 that suddenly appeared on streaming services for a few months before promptly disappearing again. (Presumably because their brief existence marked the tapes as being “officially released” by the 50-year mark, and could then ensure any other would-be sellers could be charged with copyright infringement.)
Tom says
"They’ve done this before with other late ‘60s / early ‘70s Bob recordings, and with this sort of release, they don’t care about reflecting the shows accurately, or the listener experience. It’s all about making sure they’re still the only ones who can make a buck off the material (regardless of whether they actually intend to capitalize on said material in a more traditional way)."
This isn't my take on the 1966 and 1975 live boxes AT ALL. Both of those were very nicely done. While this 1974 set is undoubtedly motivated in part by copyright protection, I have no reason to believe it won't be up to a similar standard.
What you're describing is the "copyright collections" that they release in very small numbers in Europe.

Yes, I’ve posted this on other sites! I was lucky to see the last NYC show at MSG, and The Band made those shows. This must be an estate/copyright situation.

Perhaps we'll soon see a complementary box titled "A Bande à part" -- a tip of the hat to Jean-Luc Godard.

I'll take the plunge on this since the price isn't insane for a set this massive. Before The Flood was one of the first CDs I ever bought once I finally got a disc player in '89. I'm not a huge Dylan fan but I love The Band. I've been hoping for some kind of set like this (though it doesn't really have to be this big) but it's a shame that The Band doesn't get at least one spotlight disc. Hopefully demand for this set at least paves the way for some kind of expanded (but less absurd than this) remastered golden anniversary edition of BTF in the not-too-distant.

Nice companion to the 1966 Tour boxset. I bought it in 2017 and i still haven't opened it. This probably have the same fate, if and when i bought this.

I envy the people who have the time in their lives to listen to these massive collections.

I hope there will be a smaller version of this release.

Funny, but the only tracks I thought were outstanding on the original LP were ‘The Band’ tracks. LOL that those will all be missing from this giant set.

sony has dylan capitol is umg. never the twain shall me. all the shows are available in the underground. find them take out the band songs and there u go.

Unfortunately the shows that are available are the Oakland, NYC , Boston & LA Forum in soundboard quality . The others that circulate are audience recordings . While I certainly wish the band sets were included, from a copyright point of view it could have been a very difficult road to traverse
