Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Sings Christmas Carols (Expanded Edition) (Second Disc/Real Gone) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Real Gone Music)
Over the past decade, we here at TSD have happily partnered with Real Gone Music on an array of Christmas releases from such evergreen artists as Johnny Mathis, The Supremes, Chet Atkins, Connie Smith, and Robert Goulet. But our newest yuletide title is from our biggest ever group - bigger than Mitch Miller and His Gang or Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra! Now, we're proud to reissue the very first Christmas album from a group numbering 360 members: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The original mono version of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sings Christmas Carols has been expanded with four rare period bonus tracks originally released between 1957 and 1959 (in stereo). Everything has been newly remastered from the original Columbia Masterworks tapes by Mike Milchner at SonicVision, and a 12-page booklet contains new liner notes from TSD's Joe Marchese which explore The Mormon Tabernacle Choir's history of Christmas music. The most wonderful time of the year has just gotten a bit more wonderful with the authorized CD premiere of this lost classic from "America's Choir" that's sure to enliven your Christmas morning. While all six albums will be available individually, the box set includes a further exclusive: a re-pressing of that year's double-album audio documentary The Beatles' Story, which included snippets of interviews, press conferences and songs with voiceover narration. Kevin Reeves has cut the lacquers in an all-analog chain from the original master tapes at East Iris Studios in Nashville. Get more details here!

The set, available exactly 20 years to the day of its original release, features five CDs or eight LPs of music: the original album, a "shadow album" of outtakes under the name How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb, vintage remixes of singles like "Vertigo," "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own" and "City of Blinding Lights," and the debut audio release of Vertigo 2005 - Live from Chicago, released on DVD in 2005 in the wake of the album. Each format includes a book of photographs from the era by Anton Corbijn. New double vinyl and CD pressings of the original album (with ex-U.S. bonus track "Fast Cars") will be made, and a "Re-Assemble Edition" - combining Dismantle and Re-Assemble - will be available digitally. As with previous releases, the Definitive Edition will not port over all the extra material from bonus discs in the 2008 reissue of the same album, but many of those remixes and B-sides will come back into print with reissues of the original 12" singles related to Brotherhood - in this case, non-album singles "State of the Nation" and "Touched by the Hand of God" (the former of which was included on CD copies of Brotherhood, and the latter appearing on the soundtrack to the televangelist black comedy Salvation!) and the band's U.S. breakthrough "Bizarre Love Triangle." Zubb says
Hard to believe that there weren't any additional tracks from the Don Henley "I Can't Stand Still" sessions that they could have added as bonus tracks for the reissue. Would have been nice.
Dana says
I thought this about both of Henley's reissues this week. Nothing in the vault worthy of adding to either one of these albums, really?
Michael Grabowski says
And Pet Shop Boys release a deluxe edition of nonetheless with a disc full of demo versions today.
Larry Davis says
Not just the demos (which are as good as the main album), but 4 new songs...one is a great cover of Bowie/Mott's "All the Young Dudes"!! None of the B-sides from the album's 5 released singles though...
Harry Cohen says
WOW!! Starting with Nancy Wilson and ending with Simple Minds, I want everything on this week's list. I should just send this to everyone on my holiday list and say pick any one of these, PLEASE!!
Joe Marchese says
Nancy has been delayed a couple of weeks, but she’ll be back! 😉
