The Weekend Stream: January 18, 2025

January 18, 2025 By The Second Disc 1 Comment

Welcome to The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts!   This week, we're heavy on the classic rock plus a vintage soundtrack, a dash of modern classical, and more!

Fleetwood Mac, Live from the Record Plant (December 15, 1974) (Rhino) (iTunes / Amazon)

Coinciding with its standalone vinyl debut as part of Rhino's Start Your Ear Off Right, this vintage pre-Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac concert hit digital services earlier this month.  (Better late than never!)  Featuring the classic early-era tracks "Hypnotized," "Oh Well," "Future Games," "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)," "Sentimental Lady," and more, this set was previously available on CD as part of the 2020 box set Fleetwood Mac: 1969 to 1974.

Rufus Wainwright, Dream Requiem (Warner Classics) (iTunes / Amazon)

Rufus Wainwright had an eclectic 2024, with projects including the West End musical Opening Night and this classical commission based on the text of Lord Byron's "Darkness" and the Requiem Mass.  Today, Warner Classics has the live recording of the premiere performance. Byron's text is mostly narrated by an actor (in this case, Meryl Streep; a future California performance will be narrated by Jane Fonda) and is underscored by orchestra.  The Latin Requiem text is sung by a large mixed choir, children's choir, and soprano (Anna Prohaska). Mikko Franck conducts.  CD and vinyl releases follow in North America on February 21.

Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts, "big change" (Reprise) (iTunes / Amazon)

On Monday, "big change" is coming to the U.S., and Neil Young isn't being shy about his thoughts.  He's released a timely track for the occasion.  He's joined by co-producer Lou Adler and a new band including the legendary Spooner Oldham on Farfisa organ, Micah Nelson on guitar and vocals, Corey McCormick on bass and vocals, and Anthony LoGerfo on drums.

The Doors, Live at the Matrix 1967: The Original Masters (Elektra/Rhino) (iTunes / Amazon)

The Doors have kicked off a yearlong campaign to bring their Bright Midnight Archives series of live recordings to digital platforms.  Live at the Matrix 1967: The Original Masters was issued on 3 CDs (or 5 LPs) in 2023, including all of the surviving master tapes of the band's Matrix stand just months after the release of their debut album.  Upcoming releases in this series include Live in Boston, 1970, on April 4, recorded at the Boston Arena on April 10, 1970, with both performances; Live in Philadelphia '70, recorded at The Spectrum on May 1, 1970, and Live in Pittsburgh, 1970, recorded at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena on May 2, 1970, on May 2; Live in Detroit 1970, recorded May 8, 1970, at the Cobo Arena, on May 8; Live in Vancouver, 1970, recorded at the Pacific Coliseum on June 6, 1970 (and features a guest appearance by bluesman Albert King) on June 6; Live In Bakersfield, California, August 21, 1970, on August 21; Live at Konserthuset, Stockholm, September 20, 1968, on September 19, with both the early and late shows.  Each release has been mastered by The Doors' longtime engineer/mixer, Bruce Botnick.

INXS, The Gift (Robin Hancock Remix) (Petrol/Atlantic) (iTunes / Amazon)

Yup, we've got more INXS for you from All Juiced Up Part 2!  Here's Robin Hancock's remix of "The Gift," the first single off 1993's Full Moon, Dirty Hearts which reached the top 10 of the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart.

Sheba, Baby: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Buddah/Legacy) (iTunes / Amazon)

Monk Higgins and Alex Brown teamed with vocalist Barbara Mason (and a group of A-list musicians and background vocalists including Darlene Love and her sister, The Honey Cone's Edna Wright) for this Blaxploitation soundtrack - the film starred Pam Grier as a private eye - which is new to digital formats (and has never been released on CD).

Phil Collins, Separate Lives (Live) (Craft/Rhino) (YouTube / Amazon)

This cut from Phil Collins' Live from the Board EP (recently reissued on vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday) goes digital today.  Oddly, we're not seeing this one on iTunes yet, so we've provided a YouTube link for your enjoyment as well as the usual Amazon link.  (And this might be a good time for all of you "Easy Lover" fans to check out TSD and SoulMusic Records' 3-CD release of Philip Bailey's Columbia recordings!)
