Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts. Classic Motown in concert, long-lost favorites from a country icon, a live country take on a Fab Four favorite, Gary Numan's mid-'80s works, new music from Bachman-Turner Overdrive and a documentary on a late, great Australian musician...there really is a lot of ground to cover, and that's not even all of it!
Marvin Gaye, Marvin Gaye Live! (Deluxe Edition) (Motown/UMe)
Original LP: Apple / Amazon
Deluxe: Apple / Amazon
To mark the 50th anniversary of this killer live album - commemorating Gaye's return to full-scale touring since the illness and eventual death of duet partner Tammi Terrell - it's been reissued with all the songs recorded at this performance at the Oakland Coliseum in 1974. (The renditions of "Flyin' High (in the Friendly Sky)," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "Keep Gettin' It On" were included on a 1998 CD release, while the mid-set version of "Come Get to This" was first heard on a deluxe edition of Let's Get It On.) UMe has also restored the original LP to digital music apps, and both have also been remixed in Dolby Atmos.
Fleetwood Mac, 1975 to 1987 (Warner/Rhino) (Apple / Amazon)
Thanks to our reader Galley for noting that this week's box set featuring the studio albums by the classic quintet lineup of the Mac is also available digitally, meaning you can add the mono versions of "Go Your Own Way" and "Silver Springs" available on the bonus 12" to your library that way, as well.

¡Viva Kenny!: Apple / Amazon
At long last, Universal has released the first eight of Kenny Rogers and The First Edition's original albums in a digital format, long unavailable in any format (and most never released on CD). These albums span 1966-1971 and feature a number of hits ("Just Dropped In," "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," "But You Know I Love You," "Reuben James") from the group that fused pop, rock, psychedelia, and country. There's plenty to explore here, from the delightful Paul Williams/Roger Nichols sunshine pop tune "Only Me" on 2nd to the ambitious concept album The Ballad of Calico co-written by future "Wildfire" hitmaker Michael Martin Murphey. In between, the band recorded songs by such top-drawer tunesmiths as Kris Kristofferson, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, P.F. Sloan, Mac Davis, Mickey Newbury, Carole King, and Dallas Frazier as well as the group's own Rogers, Mike Settle, and Kin Vassy, among others. Until a much-deserved box set comes along, these sparkling digital remasters should go a long way in celebrating this long-overlooked band that was much more than just a stepping stone for future superstar Kenny Rogers.
UMe has also recently honored the fifth anniversary of Rogers' passing with a new EP called ¡Viva Kenny!, offering Spanish-language versions of "She Believes in Me," "Love the World Away," the Kim Carnes duet "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer" and the Lionel Richie-penned and produced "Lady." These tracks have neither been released digitally nor were they ever available in America - a terrific archival find for one of country's legends.
Bachman-Turner Overdrive, "60 Years Ago" (12 Hit Wonder Canada) (Apple / Amazon)
To hype up an upcoming tour of their homeland, Bachman-Turner Overdrive just released their first single in more than a quarter century, a tribute to the music scene that molded them back in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In addition to founding members Randy Bachman and Fred Turner plus Randy's son Tal (of "She's So High" fame) and daughter-in-law KoKo, the track also features a guitar solo from another hero of the local scene, Neil Young. Proceeds from the single will be donated to the Bridge to Nowhere charity ride, combatting homelessness in the Winnipeg area.
Ringo Starr and Friends, With a Little Help from My Friends (UMe) (Apple / Amazon)
From Ringo's January concerts at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium comes this live rendition of the Beatles classic featuring a "Who's Who" of friends including Sheryl Crow, Rodney Crowell, Mickey Guyton, Brenda Lee, Emmylou Harris, Sarah Jarosz, Jamey Johnson, Larkin Poe, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, and Jack White. Proceeds from this single go to support those impacted by the California wildfires, benefiting the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity.
Gary Numan, Berserker (Extended) / White Noise (Live) / The Fury (Extended) / Strange Charm (Extended) / Ghost (Live) / Machine + Soul (Extended) / Dream Corrosion (Live) (Numan Music/BMG)
Berserker: Apple / Amazon
White Noise: Apple / Amazon
Fury: Apple / Amazon
Strange Charm: Apple / Amazon
Ghost: Apple / Amazon
Machine + Soul: Apple / Amazon
Dream Corrosion: Apple / Amazon
In 1984, at a time when it wasn't common practice, "Cars" singer Gary Numan formed the Numa label to release several albums in the '80s and '90s, starting with 1984's electro-funk/industrial Berserker. He's now coupled those Numa releases - four studio albums with bonus tracks and three live releases - into a new deal at BMG. They'll release the expanded Berserker as a 4CD set next month that'll also include the contents of the live set White Noise; there's no word yet if the other releases will have physical versions of their own yet, but let's hope so!
Marianne Faithfull, "Burning Moonlight" (Decca) (Apple / Amazon)
Released a few weeks ago, the lead track and title song to Burning Moonlight marks the final works by the British singer, recorded as an intended career capstone when it was recorded in the last year. The full four-track EP will be digitally available June 6 and will also be released on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 12 - an announcement that was initially held back, as the list dropped less than a week after her passing.
Alison Brown and Steve Martin feat. Tim O'Brien, "5 Days Out, 2 Days Back" (Compass Records) (Apple / Amazon)
Only Murders in the Building star Steve Martin teams with fellow banjoist Alison Brown and vocalist/mandolinist Tim O'Brien for "5 Days Out, 2 Days Back," a new collaboration which will be featured later this year on Martin and Brown's joint album of new bluegrass tunes. The trio is joined on the track by a band including Bryan Sutton (guitar, harmony vocals), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Todd Phillips (bass), and Vickie Vaughn (harmony vocals).
Sheryl Crow, "Soak Up the Sun" (Surf Mesa Remix) (A&M/UMe) (Apple / Amazon)
Just in time for spring, a striking new mix of Crow's 2002 pop favorite.
MCC Theater's Miscast: The Studio Sessions (Joy Machine) (Apple / Amazon)
Every year, MCC Theater's Miscast benefit offers audiences the chance to see their favorite Broadway stars singing songs from roles in which they would be, well, miscast - but that doesn't mean they can't sing the heck out of the songs! Joy Machine Records' new (alas, digital-only for now, anyway!) Miscast: The Studio Sessions preserves some of those classic performances. This album is the only place you'll hear Ben Platt as Elphaba with "The Wizard and I" or Katrina Lenk as Tevye doing "If I Were a Rich Man." Other highlights include Kelli O'Hara's "Beautiful City" from Godspell and Jonathan Groff and Jeremy Jordan facing off in "Let Me Be Your Star" from Smash (currently in previews on Broadway). As a special treat, the album features Aaron Tveit's 2016 live duet with the late Gavin Creel on Rent's "Take Me or Leave Me" - a thrilling tribute to the much-missed, gone-too-soon star.
Ariana Grande, eternal sunshine deluxe: brighter days ahead (Republic) (Apple / Amazon)
Though Ari's seventh album had its share of hits when it dropped last year - chart-toppers "Yes, And?" and "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)" were her eight and ninth No. 1 singles - reception seemed slightly more muted than previous releases, and Grande herself indicated that she might pivot back toward` acting after her Oscar-nominated turn as Glinda in the blockbuster two-part adaptation of the musical Wicked. Nevertheless, the album is back in a new deluxe edition today that includes six previously unreleased tracks. (A physical edition adds three previously released remixes, including a version of "Yes, And?" with Mariah Carey and a take on the Grande original "The Boy is Mine" that also interpolates parts of the chart-topping Brandy/Monica duet of the same name, with both singers recording new vocals.)
Niall Horan, Heartbreak Weather (5 Year Anniversary Edition) (Capitol/UMe) (Apple / Amazon)
Irish singer Niall Horan, best known as one of the members of U.K. boy band One Direction, embarked on a mature new direction for his sophomore album. Inspired by Bruce Springsteen and Arctic Monkeys and featuring collaborations with 1D producers John Ryan and Julian Bunetta as well as pop stalwarts like Teddy Geiger and Tobias Jesso Jr., the album topped the British charts and reached the Top 5 in America even while it had the incredible misfortune of being released the week the COVID-19 pandemic sparked lockdowns around the world. It's now getting a second shot with a bonus disc's worth of material, including tracks from a livestream he conducted at an audience-free Royal Albert Hall a few weeks after the album dropped and some studio bonus cuts last available on a CD pressing sold at Target stores. (Physical versions of this title are coming in August, with the 2LP including an extra live track.)
Finally: a worthwhile documentary tribute to a beloved musician. Neil Finn may have been the leading creative force by the end of New Zealand band Split Enz's tenure, and the beating heart of subsequent pop/rock outfit Crowded House. But Australian drummer Paul Hester was a vital part of both bands, serving as the Enz's last drummer and both the timekeeper and irascible concert spirit of Crowded House's initial period from 1986 to 1994. Hester sadly died by suicide in 2005 - 20 years ago this week - and Hessie, a moving hourlong tribute, has been assembled in his honor by Enz/CH associate Peter Green. It combines new interviews with family and bandmates (including Noel Crombie and Eddie Rayner of Split Enz and former Crowded House guitarist/keyboardist Mark Hart) and lovely rare footage (in great quality) of TV appearances, live sets and other behind-the-scenes glimpses. It's a proper tribute to a much-missed musician.
the First Edition catalog would be an instant buy for me on CD! No sale digitally.
My label had requested a First Edition license from Universal a couple years ago but nothing came of it. May be an idea to revisit. If Iconoclassic doesn’t, I’m sure that another label will.
I would love it if you could get the licenses. You would do it right!
Hopefully, the “Fools” soundtrack by Kenny Rogers & the First Edition would finally be released on CD.
