Randy Newman, Trouble in Paradise: Expanded Edition (Warner/Rhino)
2CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
Rhino Reserves LP: Rhino.com
We Love It! Rhino reissues Randy Newman's seventh studio album, Trouble in Paradise, as a 2CD expanded edition featuring previously unreleased demos and a rare concert performance. With such classics as "I Love LA" and "Real Emotional Girl," Trouble remains one of Newman's most beloved LPs. This generous release adds the singer-songwriter's largely unadorned, often intimate demos of every track on the album save "Mikey's" as well as demos of two previously unreleased tunes, "Big Fat Country Song (Something to Sing About)" and "Rainbow." The second disc offers the CD premiere of Un Samedi en Decembre, a promotional live album originally issued only in France. The 14-song set was recorded on December 10, 1982 for French television and includes "Christmas in Cape Town" alongside Newman classics such as "Marie," "Sail Away," "Louisiana 1927," "Short People," "Rednecks," and "I Think It's Going to Rain Today." Additionally, a 180-gram black vinyl pressing of Trouble in Paradise will also be available as part of Rhino's audiophile-aimed Rhino Reserves series, remastered from the original analog tapes by Matthew Lutthans. Simple Minds, Once Upon a Time: 40th Anniversary Edition (Virgin/A&M/UMe)
5CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
Ruby Red LP (with "Don't You (Forget About Me)" as bonus track: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
A reconfigured version of a Simple Minds box set released a decade ago will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band's biggest international success, Once Upon a Time. This new 5CD edition offers the original 1985 album (featuring the singles "Alive and Kicking," "Sanctify Yourself," "All the Things She Said" and "Ghost Dancing") alongside two discs of single edits, remixes and B-sides, and the 1987 concert album Live in the City of Light. The discs will be packaged in three gatefold wallets alongside a booklet of liner notes featuring interviews with band members Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill, all housed in a clamshell box smaller than the 2015 release. (The set also does not include the DVD from the previous set, featuring a 5.1 surround mix of the album and a host of music videos.) Additionally, a ruby red gatefold vinyl pressing will be released on the same date, adding "Don't You (Forget About Me)" - the band's chart-topping hit from the soundtrack to The Breakfast Club - to the end of the first side.
Connie Francis, Christmas in My Heart (Republic/UMe) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Universal reissues the late, great Connie Francis' 1959 album Christmas in My Heart on CD with four bonus sides: 1961's "Baby's First Christmas," 1962's "I'm Gonna Be Warm This Winter," 1964's "Blue Winter," and "Happy New Year, Baby," unreleased until 1987. The vinyl LP reissue drops the latter two songs.
James Taylor, James Taylor at Christmas (Legacy)
CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
Legacy Recordings expands James Taylor at Christmas - which has already gone through numerous iterations since 2004 when it was first released as the Hallmark-exclusive A Christmas Album - to 15 tracks on CD by bringing together all of the songs from its various incarnations including "Deck the Halls" from the original release, "River" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from 2006, and "Mon Beau Sapin" from 2012. The vinyl version has twelve tracks only, mirroring the standard 2006 presentation.
Kool & The Gang, Greatest Hits (Mercury/UMe) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
To celebrate the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and Robert "Kool" Bell's 75th birthday, Mercury releases a straightforward 12-song hits collection for Kool & The Gang with such perennials as "Too Hot," "Joanna," "Jungle Boogie," "Cherish," "Celebration," and "Get Down on It." Available on CD and vinyl. Get the track listing and more here.
The Meters, Live at the Great American Music Hall (SING Market) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The legendary N'awlins funk outfit is captured at their peak on this new reissue. Live at the Great American Music Hall features the same concert which surfaced in 1981 as At Rozy's. That original LP purported to preserve a performance from the New Orleans nightclub in December 1976. Recent research, however, has revealed that the concert was actually recorded the previous year at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. The title has been altered to reflect that, and the audio (including previously unreleased tracks) has been remastered from tape. Available on CD and vinyl (previously issued in an exclusive version for Record Store Day).
