Phil Collins is taking his Jacket to the cleaners and coming back with a whole new cut.
Following a similar recent deluxe set for Both Sides, the Genesis drummer/singer's most commercially successful solo album, 1985's No Jacket Required, is being revisited for its 40th anniversary in two new formats. There's a new "Fully Tailored" 4LP set that offers a new half-speed master of the album, cut at Abbey Road Studios and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, along with three discs including all the live tracks and demos from a 2016 deluxe CD plus non-album sides and three previously unreleased live versions. Additionally, engineer Steven Wilson has worked his restorative magic on the LP, creating new Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround and stereo mixes that'll appear alongside the original hi-res stereo mix on a Blu-ray Audio disc. Both formats are due from Rhino on September 12.
No Jacket Required was Collins' third album, and the one that took him into the stratosphere as a pop performer. He'd been at the drummer's stool for prog-rock heroes Genesis since 1970, eventually becoming lead vocalist after Peter Gabriel's departure. Gradually, they added more pop and mainstream rock influences into their work, and in 1981 Phil stepped out on his own with the brooding Face Value, featuring the classic "In the Air Tonight." As the decade went on, Collins started making regular appearances on the U.S. pop charts: Genesis' "Misunderstanding" and "That's All" became Top 20 and Top 10 hits, as did Collins' 1983 cover of The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love." (He also produced Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad's post-ABBA masterpiece Something's Going On, featuring the U.S. Top 20 "I Know There's Something Going On.")
Suddenly, 1984 saw the fuse light for Phil with the chart-topping Oscar nominee "Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now)" and, as 1985 began, a U.K. No. 1 and U.S. No. 2 with Philip Bailey's "Easy Lover," which he co-wrote, produced, duetted and drummed on. Working again with producer/engineer Hugh Padgham, Jacket was packed with more uptempo songs ("Sussudio," "Don't Lose My Number," "Only You Know and I Know") plus a share of ballads and synthesized mid-tempo epics ("One More Night," "Long, Long Way to Go," "Take Me Home") that seemed tailored (no pun intended) for mainstream success. Indeed, "Sussudio" and "One More Night" topped the Billboard Hot 100, while "Don't Lose My Number" and "Take Me Home" reached the Top 10 in the States. A flashy, Concorde jet-assisted appearance at both Live Aid charity concerts in London and Philadelphia on July 13, 1985 helped make Phil one of the most singularly ubiquitous figures in pop, helping Jacket clear more than 12 million copies in America alone. (That hot streak continued into 1986 with Genesis' Invisible Touch.)
When No Jacket required was remastered and expanded with the rest of Collins' solo works across 2016, fans were perplexed at the lack of released but hard-to-find material like non-LP B-sides, in favor of a smattering of demos but mostly unreleased live versions of the album's tracks across more than a decade of performances. (Only one came from the album's accompanying tour.) That oversight is somewhat corrected with the presence of four original B-sides (including original CD closer "We Said Hello Goodbye") as well as another hit from the period: "Separate Lives," an Oscar-nominated, chart-topping ballad recorded with singer Marilyn Martin for the soundtrack of the Gregory Hines-Mikhail Baryshnikov drama White Nights. Additionally, the set includes four tracks that weren't on any reissue of the album, three of which have never been released anywhere: a live BBC recording of "One More Night," a 1985 live take on "Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now)" and Collins' stark solo version of "Long, Long Way to Go" from Live Aid at Wembley Stadium, with Sting reprising his backing vocals. (A take on "Sussudio" from Collins' live big band set A Hot Night in Paris (1999) rounds out the set.) Meanwhile, Wilson's mixes of the original LP running order (no "We Said Hello Goodbye" here) will be featured on the Blu-ray Audio. Though the album's cheeky videos were recently restored to HD, they are not included.
Amazon links are starting to populate for both formats, which can be found below. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.) Both sizes of Jacket arrive September 12.

Steven Wilson's really scraping the bottom of the barrel, isn't he?
It’s a gig, I guess.
I'm sure he will get around to your favorite soon enough taylor swift
Can’t possibly be that Steven actually likes this album, right? Since he only remixes albums he personally likes.
