Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts. Rare mixes from David Bowie, late-period repertoire from Squeeze (with a new distributor hinting at their next album) and an actor who plays jazz will start you off...
David Bowie, I Can't Give Everything Away E.P. (ISO/Parlophone) (Apple / Amazon)
Released last week in conjunction with the last of Bowie's era-focused boxes, this EP offers five new-to-digital remixes released between 2002 and 2016.
Squeeze, Spot the Difference / Live At The Fillmore / The Knowledge (Love/BMG)
Spot: Apple / Amazon
Live: Apple / Amazon
Knowledge: Apple / Amazon
Three post-reunion projects by British pop/rock icons Squeeze - the 2010 re-recorded hits album Spot the Difference, the 2012 concert set Live At The Fillmore and 2017's The Knowledge (their latest album of original material, after 2015's Cradle to the Grave) - have been digitally available before, but sharp eyes will note they're now distributed by BMG Rights Management. This could be a sign that the band's just-teased, forthcoming album Trixie's (featuring unrecorded songs co-founders Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook penned near the beginning of their partnership in the mid-'70s) will be coming from the same label, as well.
Jeff Goldblum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, Plays Well with Others (Deluxe Version) (Decca/UMO) (Apple / Amazon)
Hollywood's most eccentric actor/jazzer - catch him next month co-starring as the antiheroic Wizard of Oz in Wicked: For Good, the second act of the Broadway smash - has been playing piano with his combo, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, since 2014 and signed to Decca in 2018 to release collections of spry standards (most recently this spring's Still Blooming, which featured vocals from his Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as well as actress Scarlett Johansson, herself an occasional musician). The 2023 EP Plays Well with Others, which featured vocals from original American Idol Kelly Clarkson and "Band of Gold" singer Freda Payne, is now digitally expanded with instrumental versions of four tracks.
Cowboy Junkies, More Acoustic Junk (Cooking Vinyl) (Apple / Amazon)
A Record Store Day release from earlier this year, More Acoustic Junk combined stripped-down new recordings along with new mixes of cuts from the Canadian alt-country band's 2009 limited edition album Acoustic Junk.
Buffalo Tom, Sleepy Eyed (Expanded Edition) (Beggars Banquet) (Apple / Amazon)
The stripped-down fifth album from Boston alt-rockers Buffalo Tom (whose frontman Bill Janovitz just penned a well-reviewed book on the history of local heroes The Cars) celebrates its 20th anniversary with a digital expansion featuring six demos.
The Fall, BBC Radio Sessions EP (Beggars Banquet) (Apple / Amazon)
It's hard to make out on the cover art, but this is a session Mark E. Smith and band did for John Peel in 1987 on an off-year between albums. Features a few songs that would appear on that following year's The Frenz Experiment.
Little Big Town, Scattered, Smothered and Covered (MCA Nashville) (Apple / Amazon)
The Nashville quartet returns with a new six-song EP of covers including "Wonderwall," "Rocket Man," "Hello, It's Me," and "Wichita Lineman," the latter in a live recording with its composer-lyricist, Jimmy Webb, on piano.
Jimmy Webb, Desperados Under the Eaves (Paradiddle Records) (Apple / Amazon)
And that's not all from Mr. Webb. He offers a solo single this week covering the late, great Warren Zevon's poignant ballad "Desperados Under the Eaves" which Zevon first cut on his 1976 self-titled album. It will be included on an upcoming Zevon tribute album, Keep Me in Your Heart: The Songs of Warren Zevon.
Reba McEntire, The Hits (MCA Nashvllle) (Apple / Amazon)
The country legend and current Happy's Place star has rounded up thirteen favorites for digital and vinyl LP release including "Fancy," "Consider Me Gone," "Whoever's in New England," "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," and Reba theme "I'm a Survivor."
Night Ark, Picture (RCA Novus) (Apple / Amazon)
Finally, from our pals at SuperVisible Multi Media comes the debut album from Turkish/Armenian instrumentalists Night Ark, including their best-known track "Homecoming."
