Fans of Duran Duran and supergroups will multiply for this one: Rhino is expanding the self-titled debut from The Power Station into a 4CD box set next year.
The Power Station DLX includes the remastered album (featuring the hits "Some Like It Hot" and a cover of T. Rex's "Get It On (Bang a Gong)") alongside three discs of bonus material, including unreleased "raw instrumental" versions, single mixes and live material, including the band's performances from the charity concert Live Aid and an unissued full set from nearly a month later at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. The clamshell-cased collection includes a 12-page book of liner notes featuring liner notes by John Earls including new interviews with the band's surviving members, John Taylor and Andy Taylor of Duran Duran. A recycled double-vinyl version will include the remastered album and a sample of the rarities on the second disc of the box. It's due in stores January 23.
On a hiatus from Duran Duran (during which members Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor released an album as the one-off art-pop project Arcadia), bassist John and guitarist Andy Taylor were eager to get into something more rock oriented than the dance-pop of their main band. John's then-girlfriend, model Bebe Buell, had designs to cover T. Rex's "Get It On," and the Taylors hit on the idea of having a rotating cast of singers join them for some sort of project, recruiting in the process John's idol Bernard Edwards, bassist of CHIC, as producer and that same band's drummer Tony Thompson. Though everyone from Mick Jagger to Billy Idol was considered, it was blue-eyed soul singer Robert Palmer who really clicked with the group in the studio, penning an original, "Communication," with the Taylors and soon taking a pass on the other material they'd assembled. The funk-rock-tinged material included a cover of The Isley Brothers' "Harvest for the World" and the propulsive "Some Like It Hot," infused with percussion from Duran's Roger Taylor and a horn section that included session greats Lenny Pickett and Mars Williams of The Psychedelic Furs.
The Power Station - named for the legendary New York City studio where it was recorded - became an international success in the spring of 1985, with "Some Like It Hot" and "Get It On" becoming Top 10 hits in America. With Palmer finally earning greater exposure outside of the U.K. charts, though, he passed on touring in support of the record, only performing with the group once on Saturday Night Live. (Palmer instead recorded his own solo blockbuster Riptide that same year, with producer Edwards and everyone but John Taylor on the LP, including hit single "Addicted to Love.") Undeterred, the remaining members recruited rock journeyman Michael Des Barres for a tour that took them to Live Aid's American enterprise (which also saw the last performance of Duran Duran with Andy or Roger Taylor for two decades) as well as other venues through the summer. (The Spectrum set, as a result, features several of Des Barres' solo tracks and even a take on Animotion's "Obsession," a hit single the singer co-wrote with Holly Knight.) This line-up also made a cameo on the hit NBC drama Miami Vice and even recorded one track, "We Fight for Love," which played over the end credits to the Arnold Schwarzenegger action epic Commando.
The original Power Station line-up attempted to reunite for the album Living in Fear in 1996; John Taylor contributed to the writing of all the songs but did not record, with producer Edwards taking his place. Tragically, while touring Japan with CHIC before the album was released, Edwards contracted a fateful case of pneumonia. (Palmer and Andy Taylor limped through a promotional tour with Guy Pratt on bass.) Tragedy further struck in 2003 when both Palmer and Thompson passed away within months of each other. The Power Station was reissued as a CD/DVD with bonus material (including a few edits not present on this set) for its 20th anniversary in 2005, after the Taylors rejoined Duran Duran the previous year.

All the live stuff doesn't have Robert Palmer on vocals, presumably?...
Maybe I am confused but who is the vocalist on the live tracks? Palmer or DesBarres? Or is it a combination?
Thanks
The live tracks are all Des Barres, Palmer recorded the studio tracks, then went back to his solo work.
Famously a fan once approached Des Barres, "I'm a big fan of your work with Power Station", to which Des Barres replied: "No you're not. Nobody is".
No disrespect, love the man, but... yeah.
Major pass for me.
Agreed Bill. Looking at Mike's description of the content, then I don't think Robert Palmer is the vocalist on any of the live material?....
Other people have confirmed that it is not Palmer on the live material.. Drat!

Which is why this set is a major pass for me.

I will pass as well. Maybe I will buy some selected tracks should they show up on iturnes.
The live stuff is DesBarres. Palmer is on the studio recordings.
Too bad we aren't getting the performances from Saturday Night Live - the only performances featuring the original lineup.
Agreed!
This is a giant NO from me. I have the previous deluxe version, which is much better than this. It includes a DVD with the music videos AND the Saturday Night Live performance. No need for any Michael Des Barres live material or instrumentals in my life.
