On March 28, 2024, Billy Joel performed the 100th concert of his long-running residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden.  Just months later, on July 25, Joel brought down the curtain on the ten-year residency with its 104th date (and the singer-songwriter’s 150th overall show at the venue).  On May 29, Columbia and Legacy will bring that landmark 100th show, featuring special guest Sting, to DVD and Blu-ray.

The 100th: Live at Madison Square Garden – The Complete Concert finds Joel in reflective yet rocking mode as he performs a string of his classic hits including “My Life,” “Vienna,” “New York State of Mind,” “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” “Piano Man,” and “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” along with his then-recent single “Turn the Lights Back On.”  (The ballad was his first pop single to hit the charts since 1997 and his first single release since 2007.)  The DVD and Blu-ray promise the complete concert, including the songs cut from the original CBS-TV broadcast (“The Downeaster Alexa,” “The Longest Time,” “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” with Sting, “Half a Mile Away,” “The Entertainer,” “Don’t Ask Me Why,” “Allentown,” “Nessun Dorma,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “Uptown Girl,” and “Big Shot”).  The truncated concert was televised by CBS on April 14, but the broadcast courted controversy when the network’s Masters Tournament coverage cut into prime-time, causing the show to begin late.  As a result, the final minutes of the show were cut off so local stations could go into their regularly-scheduled news programming.  Just days later, on April 19, CBS re-aired the entire program.

Billy Joel has been recuperating from recent, well-publicized health issues; on March 12, he attended a celebration at Carnegie Hall that found his famous songbook reinterpreted by the likes of Rob Thomas, Pat Monahan, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Natalie Merchant, Rufus Wainwright, Gavin DeGraw, and others, most of whom were accompanied by the Billy Joel Band.  The acclaimed 2025 documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes is available to stream on HBO Max, with a digital-only soundtrack streaming from Legacy.

  1. Very cool, and for once a COMPLETE concert! YAY!!

Would like it if they’d put out a CD of the full show too (It would get more play with me than the video) but it’s great that Sony’s giving us this much.

Can we now get moving on historic live Billy releases? Complete shows, not just on vinyl but also on CD and digital?? Can we also get DVD/Blu-Ray of Live From Long Island and London 1984 too?

  2. It was a great concert, will be nice to see the entire show. I was not a fan of the direction of it however. It is loaded with insanely quick edits. I miss the days of concert videos where you get to watch the performer and the players on stage and not constantly cutting to audience. I realize it’s the current tend to have these rapid fire edits, but it takes away from the show.
