On September 12, 1966, television audiences first met The Monkees.  Under the auspices of creators Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, the zany foursome of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork pushed the boundaries of the American sitcom format with their musical misadventures.  The Emmy Award-winning comedy only lasted two seasons and 58 episodes on NBC but endured thanks to Saturday morning repeats, syndication, cable, DVD, Blu-ray, and – most notably – the albums recorded by the four young men cast as The Monkees who went on to assume the roles in a real-life group.  On August 14, Rhino will celebrate Season 1 of The Monkees just in time for its 60th anniversary.

The new 2CD/1LP/1Blu-ray multimedia box set Made for TV brings together all of the music heard on Season 1 of the groundbreaking television series:

• 1 LP with 14 original “TV Mixes” as heard on The Monkees;
• 2 CDs with 28 Monkees classics from that first season; and
• 1 Blu-ray with ten selected episodes which originally aired in 1966-1967 including the series premiere (“Royal Flush”); guest appearances by Stan Freberg (“Monkee vs. Machine”) and Rose Marie (“Monkee Mother”); and a music-focused episode spotlighting the quartet in concert and lacking the traditional laugh track (“The Monkees on Tour”).

Longtime Monkees historian and steward Andrew Sandoval has produced this beautifully-designed set and provided the liner notes for it, as well.  The mono TV version of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart’s “She” is currently streaming.  Look for Micky Dolenz on tour this summer and fall celebrating 60 Years of the Monkees.
