You Bring the Summer: The Monkees’ ‘Good Times!’ Revisited for 10th Anniversary

Back in 2016, The Monkees celebrated their 50th anniversary with their first album of new material since 1996’s Justus.  The appropriately-titled Good Times!, produced by Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger, was a true return to form.  As TSD noted in its original review, “The Monkees have just released their first new album in twenty years, and all is right with the world…Good Times makes no concession to the sound of modern pop.  Rather, it’s most often the classic Monkees style refracted through a muscular, power-pop prism…Don’t hesitate.  Listen to the band!”  The…

Holiday Gift Guide Review: The Monkees, “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.” [Super Deluxe Edition]

Next year marks the 60th anniversary of The Monkees, an occasion soon to be commemorated by last Monkee standing Micky Dolenz with a new tour.  The group’s home of Rhino Records has started the party early with the recent release of the latest (and last?) of the label’s series of lavish album reissues.  1967’s Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. has been expanded as a comprehensive 4CD/1-7″ box set by producer/annotator Andrew Sandoval, and as usual, the result is manna for longtime fans and collectors. Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd. found Davy Jones,…

I’m a Believer: Micky Dolenz Opens Up His Archive for “I’m Told I Had a Good Time”

It’s often been said that if you remember the 1960s, you weren’t really there.  Well, Micky Dolenz has incontrovertible proof that he was there, and as he says, I’m Told I Had a Good Time.  That’s the title of the remarkable new tome from Beatland Books which chronicles the singer-drummer-actor’s life from 1945-1978 via previously unpublished photographs, artwork, scripts, lyrics, and assorted miscellany. I’m Told I Had a Good Time, now available for pre-order with a December 6 ship date, follows Beatland’s 2021 publication of Andrew Sandoval’s definitive The Monkees: The Day-by-Day…

Review: The Monkees, “Headquarters: Super Deluxe Edition”

It didn’t take long for The Monkees to realize that they’d experienced a level of success far beyond their wildest dreams.  Far from being mere actors on a television show portraying a band, they’d been thrust in front of capacity crowds in stadiums, arenas, and large auditoriums – a de facto band that, in reality, wasn’t yet calling the shots on their own careers and music.  That changed when Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, and Peter Tork demanded creative freedom from impresario Don Kirshner – and got it.  The road wasn’t…

You Just May Be The One: The Monkees Revisit “Headquarters” With 55th Anniversary Box Set

55 years ago, The Monkees took part in what TV Guide deemed to be “the Great Revolt of ’67.”  Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork demanded creative control from impresario Don Kirshner – and won it.  The group might have been brought together as actors portraying a band, but they were ready to build upon their phenomenal success and become that band in reality, too.  The Headquarters album, The Monkees’ third, was the startling result.  It became their third consecutive No. 1 album in less than one year, and…

I Remember the Feeling: 7a Records Reissues Studio and Live Albums from Dolenz, Jones, Boyce and Hart

The names of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart have long been inextricably linked with that of The Monkees.  The duo penned many of the band’s most familiar songs including “(Theme From) ‘The Monkees,’” “I Wanna Be Free,” “(I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone,” “Valleri,” and the chart-topping “Last Train to Clarksville.”  So when promoters were seeking a Monkees reunion in the mid-1970s, and with Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork unavailable, it’s unsurprising that Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz turned to Boyce and Hart – hitmakers in their own right with “I Wonder What…

Since its publication in 2005, author Andrew Sandoval’s The Monkees: The Day-by-Day Story has been an indispensable reference tool for fans of Davy, Micky, Peter, and Michael – not to mention one helluva read.  But as the years passed, the guide to all things Monkees went out of print, with secondhand copies fetching in the three-figure range.  Happily, Sandoval has returned to the book for a completely new edition due this June.  We were thrilled to have the chance to speak with the author about the upcoming 2021 presentation. “It’s been 15…

Propinquity: 7a Records Announces Micky’s “Dolenz Sings Nesmith” For May Release

Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith have shared a musical journey together since 1966 when The Monkees first hit the NBC airwaves and the group’s chart-topping debut album arrived in stores on the Colgems label.  When COVID-19 unexpectedly struck one year ago, Dolenz and Nesmith were preparing to take to the road once again for An Evening with The Monkees; once the virus rendered that impossible, Dolenz got to work on a celebration of his dedicated friend’s classic songs.  The result is Dolenz Sings Nesmith, due on May 21 in CD and LP…
