“I’m trying to get to the core of what this Rolling Thunder thing is all about…and I don’t have a clue!”  Bob Dylan impishly addressed his most famed concert tour – and, indeed, one of the most famed of all time – for the 2019 fact-meets-fiction film Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese.  The Academy Award-winning director knew that there were many stories surrounding Dylan’s carnival-esque Rolling Thunder tour of 1975-1976 – true, false, and everything in between – and all of those stories were manifested in the blazing music that was heard in venues across America.  To coincide with the film, Columbia/Legacy released The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings, a 14-CD box featuring five complete performances plus bonus material.  Now, the label is one-upping itself with a sequel.  On November 6, The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings arrives, with 39 CDs containing professionally-recorded shows from every stop of the tour’s second (and final) leg.  It all adds up to 381 tracks, only ten of which have ever been previously released.

The first leg of Rolling Thunder ended with a Madison Square Garden show on December 8, 1975. Following a visit to the Astrodome in support of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter in January 1976 (when Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills, and Joe Vitale sat in), Rolling Thunder resumed on April 18 for another five weeks’ worth of shows.  Dylan’s band for this jaunt included guitarist Bob Neuwirth, bassist Rob Stoner, violinist Scarlet Rivera, drummer Howie Wyeth, and guitarists Mick Ronson (of David Bowie’s Spiders from Mars), Steven Soles, David Mansfield, and T Bone Burnett.

The run of dates commenced with a number of cities in Florida (Lakeland, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Belleair, Orlando, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Pensacola) before moving onto venues in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and, finally, Utah.  (These were Dylan’s first-ever concerts in The Beehive State.)

Dylan’s fast and furious sets were broad-ranging, encompassing such favorites as “Visions of Johanna,” “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Maggie’s Farm,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” “Lay, Lady, Lay,” “Isis,” and “One Too Many Mornings,” among other classics.  A number of the dates here feature Dylan’s duet set with Joan Baez featuring “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Railroad Boy,” and other guests throughout include Roger McGuinn (“Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” “Gotta Travel On”), Kinky Friedman (“Gotta Travel On”), Willie Nelson (“Gotta Travel On,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” in Houston), Joni Mitchell (“Gotta Travel On” in Fort Worth), Allen Ginsberg (“Gotta Travel On” in Fort Collins), and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott (various vocals during the Fort Collins show).

The May 23 show in Colorado was taped for an NBC-TV Hard Rain special which coincided with the live album of the same name drawn from both the May 16 and 23 gigs.  The closing Utah show, at the now-demolished Salt Palace arena in Salt Lake City, was Dylan’s final live performance for 21 months other than his brief set with The Band for The Last Waltz in November 1976.  A new studio album didn’t emerge until Street-Legal in June 1978.

Music historian Mikal Gilmore chronicles the Rolling Thunder story in his liner notes, which are joined in the booklet by rare photographs.  Steve Addabbo has restored and mastered much of the set; Mike Piacentini mastered Disc 5 (the Belleair, Florida show taped for an unaired Midnight Special episode), Discs 32-33 (the Fort Worth show), and Discs 38-39 (Fort Collins).  Chris Shaw has mixed the shows from the original multitrack soundboard recordings.
