The year has barely started, yet three beloved soundtrack reissue labels are bringing the heat to 2022's score reissue slate. Between a horror-packed box set from Varese Sarabande and a trio of expanded releases by James Horner, there's much cause for celebration.
That is, if Varese doesn't kill you first! The label continues 25 years of superb scares with a new box set of soundtracks devoted to the horror franchise Scream. This zingy, gory picture, written by Kevin Williamson and directed by A Nightmare on Elm Street legend Wes Craven, found the sleepy suburb of Woodsboro terrorized by a knife-wielding killer in a distinct white mask (known only as "Ghostface") - and only a few daring souls stand in the murderer's way, including would-be teen victim Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), enterprising journalist Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and local lawman Dewey (David Arquette). Featuring a cast of current and up-and-coming stars, the first four Scream films were critically and commercially successful, becoming the heir apparent to franchises like Nightmare, Halloween and Friday the 13th. (This week sees a fifth film in the series, with Campbell, Cox and Arquette starring alongside a new generation of teens.)
Marco Beltrami's breakthrough scores for the series have been beloved by horror fans and Varese buyers for 25 years, ever since a 1997 CD combined the best of the music from the first two films. Deluxe editions of Scream and Scream 2 followed in 2011 and 2016 - and this new 6CD box set, limited to 1800 copies, features all of that and more. In addition to the expanded presentations of the first two films, Scream: Original Motion Picture Soundtracks debuts complete versions of the scores to the third and fourth films, plus a disc of "extra cuts" including demos, alternates and strays from the first four films. (A limited LP box, featuring specially sequenced highlights from the four scores pressed on red vinyl, will also be available this summer.) Both packages feature liner notes by Jim Lochner featuring new interviews with Beltrami and a fold-out Ghostface mask; they're also available in bundles with the score to the new film, composed by Brian Tyler.
La-La Land's first batch offers a few waves of '80s nostalgia - one filtered through the present, another from a pure American original. The label has again partnered with Sony Pictures Television to release the latest volume of Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson's music from the fourth season of the acclaimed Netflix series Cobra Kai. This unique continuation of The Karate Kid series now features Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) reluctantly working together to train a new generation of warriors to face off against the still-evil Cobra Kai for control of martial arts education in the Reseda valley. As the teen fighters endure their own problems, Johnny and Daniel must confront their own shortcomings if they'll be able to triumph over their old foe, Cobra Kai sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove) - who's reunited with his former partner Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) - making a return appearance from The Karate Kid Part III. Packed with big action and a fun throwback to the original film (a cover of Survivor's "The Moment of Truth" by American Idol winner Carrie Underwood), this 2CD set (featuring several cues not available on the digital release) will kick its way into fans' hearts.
From there, LLL has released a generous expansion of James Horner's Oscar-nominated score to the baseball fantasy movie Field of Dreams. Based on a novel by William P. Kinsella, the film features a humble Iowa corn farmer (Kevin Costner) who receives divine inspiration to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield - one that yields magical results tied to long-gone legends of the sport. Nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, the film is still a multi-generational touchstone; last year, Major League Baseball held the first of an annual game on the same field built for the picture. This 2CD treatment of the late, great Horner's subtle work - limited to 5000 copies - features a new expansion of the soundtrack overseen by producers Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk, plus a remaster of the original soundtrack album as it was released in 1989. A dream team of Jim Titus on package design and liner notes from Jeff Bond round out this all-star lineup.
Speaking of Horner, Intrada is revisiting two of his works in their first releases of the year. The composer made a major breakthrough in 1982 with the action-packed score to 48 HRS. - a groundbreaking early entry in the "buddy cop" genre in which a grizzled veteran of the force (Nick Nolte) reluctantly teams with a fast-talking convict (Eddie Murphy, in his first film role) to nab two cop killers in two days. Horner's score (along with song cues by rock/R&B group The BusBoys, who opened for Murphy's increasingly successful stand-up dates) was released by Intrada in 2011; this disc features not only improved sound taken from higher-quality stereo masters, but also includes five cues not on that previous disc, including alternates and source material.
Nolte, Murphy and director Walter Hill reunited for a sequel in 1990 that was allegedly waylaid by studio meddling (a quarter of the film was reportedly cut a week before its release) and not as well received. But Horner dutifully returned to Another 48 HRS., bringing the same zippy action he was by now doing even more of. This premiere release generously improves on the four tracks released on a soundtrack album when the picture was first sent out to theaters.
