Blinding Lights: The Weeknd Preps Hits Compilation Ahead of Super Bowl Performance

February 3, 2021 By The Second Disc 1 Comment

The Weeknd Highlights

In the predominantly digital and streaming world, the humble greatest hits album is scarce for even the biggest artists. Most need either a lot of hits or a newsworthy reason to put one out. For Canadian pop/R&B singer The Weeknd, whose new collection The Highlights hits stores Friday, February 5, both of those conditions handily apply. For one, the man born Abel Tesfaye has notched 35 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including chart-toppers "The Hills," "Can't Feel My Face,"

Holiday Gift Guide Review: Tears for Fears, 'The Seeds of Love: Deluxe Edition'

December 22, 2020 By The Second Disc 4 Comments

TFF Seeds of Love Deluxe

Think back to your days listening to pop music in the '80s - say, for the sake of argument, 1985. Thriller's wrapped up its run of seven hit singles. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. is in the middle of its own seven-hit stretch. Purple Rain made Prince a juggernaut - and Tears for Fears, the British duo behind the moody, electronic The Hurting (1983) have broken into the mainstream with the progressive psych-pop of 1985's Songs from the Big Chair, including back-to-back chart-toppers

Soundtrack Watch: Everybody's Talkin' About Quartet's Score Reissues

December 17, 2020 By Mike Duquette 4 Comments

THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY

As we approach the end of 2020, soundtrack labels are working overtime to put out some great archival score presentations. Not to be ignored this time of year is an impressive line-up from European label Quartet Records: last week they announced three incredible expanded releases and a new re-recording. Additionally, they recently issued another two expanded releases that are absolutely worth fans' time. Those recent releases are a pair of acclaimed scores from 1990: Jerry Goldsmith's work on

In Memoriam: Eddie Van Halen (1955-2020) and Johnny Nash (1940-2020)

October 7, 2020 By Joe Marchese 3 Comments

Eddie Van Halen

Yesterday, the world lost two titans of popular song, Eddie Van Halen and Johnny Nash.  We salute them both. Eddie Van Halen, who died of cancer at the age of 65, was born in Amsterdam and rose to fame in southern California, but his music belonged to the world.  Guitarist Eddie and brother-drummer Alex formed the band that became Van Halen in 1972 and paid their dues in the ensuing years, earning fans such as Gene Simmons and Kim Fowley.  Once Warner Bros. Records took notice of them in

Mind Blowing Decisions: Crimson Collects Three Discs of Heatwave

September 14, 2020 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Heatwave Gold

Autumn's almost here, but Demon's Crimson imprint is planning a Heatwave with the impending release of a 3CD collection in the label's Gold series that covers the U.K. R&B group in detail. Though they were based in England and signed to the country's GTO label (with Epic handling their works in the U.S.), Heatwave showcased the potential of soul, funk and R&B in the disco era to connect with a global audience. At the core of the band were two Americans (singers Johnnie Wilder, Jr. and

Pearl Jam's 'Unplugged' Set Gets Wide Release In October

September 11, 2020 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Pearl Jam Unplugged

One of the first major live sets by Pearl Jam - a stunning, stripped-down session for MTV Unplugged - will get a wide release in October. The band announced yesterday that the seven-song 1992 broadcast will bow on CD and digital formats on October 22, almost a year after its vinyl debut for Record Store Day Black Friday. Less than a year before, the quintet fired the first salvo in what would be considered rock's grunge explosion with the release of debut album Ten. Along with Alice In

June 16, 2020 By Joe Marchese 4 Comments

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs Best of Under the Covers

"In the real world, Sid 'n Susie are Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs - two navigators in the pop musical current, current tense vocally and as tunesmiths with prime craft of their own write. They've bagged the best of the '60s with uncanny insight. I know. I was there but can remember," asserted Van Dyke Parks in his introduction to 2006's Under the Covers Vol. 1. On that volume, Sid 'n Susie revisited some of their favorite songs of the 1960s, largely staying faithful to the original

Never Want It Badly Enough: The Second Disc's Top Tracks For Bandcamp Friday

June 5, 2020 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Despite the challenges facing the music business amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there are some bright spots. On March 20, indie music service Bandcamp waived their share of revenue on all sales for 24 hours, allowing artists and labels to support themselves even more robustly. Thanks to impressive results ($4.3 million spent on music and merch, 15 times an average Friday's revenue), Bandcamp repeated the strategy not once, but thrice: the first Fridays of each month (May 1, which raised $7.1

Wonderful! Wonderful! Crimson Collects "Gold" Volumes for Johnny Mathis, George Jones

April 29, 2020 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Johnny Mathis Gold

The ongoing series of budget-priced 3-CD Gold compilations from Demon Music Group's Crimson Productions continues with a pair of releases from artists for whom "legendary" is no understatement: Johnny Mathis and the late George Jones. Curating a representative sampling of Johnny Mathis' singular career in under 50 tracks is no small task, and this set is indeed decades-spanning from his first commercially released single (1956's pairing of "Wonderful! Wonderful!" and "When Sunny Gets Blue")

Give In to Love: Cherry Red Collects Dee Dee Bridgewater's R&B Years

April 8, 2020 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Dee Dee Bridgewater

Dee Dee Bridgewater has long defied easy categorization. The Grammy and Tony Award-winning singer-actress has fronted a jazz orchestra; worked with legends of the genre like Thad Jones, Dexter Gordon, and Max Roach; starred in two Broadway musicals; hosted a long-running NPR radio show; and served as a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador as part of her fight against world hunger. Cherry Red Group's Robinsongs imprint has recently collected her first four American albums on a 2-CD set. When Charlie

Review: Donna Summer, "Encore"

April 6, 2020 By Joe Marchese 29 Comments

DonnaSummer Encore pl

I. Try Me, I Know We Can Make It Donna Summer's first studio album was entitled Lady of the Night, after its retro-styled galloping pop song composed by Giorgio Moroder and the album's producer Pete Bellotte. Following the release of her next LP, Summer would own the night as an international superstar. But there was much more to the so-called Queen of Disco than just the remarkable string of hits that crossed over from the dancefloor to the mainstream pop consciousness, among them "Love to

TrevorRabin Changes pks

The multi-hyphenate  guitarist, keyboardist, singer, songwriter, and producer Trevor Rabin has garnered a reputation for his groundbreaking work in rock and in soundtrack music.  After getting his start in the successful South African pop group Rabbitt, Rabin broke away on his own with a trio of well-received solo albums and began a career as a record producer. He then teamed up with Cinema, made up of ex-Yes members Alan White and Chris Squire.  Bassist Squire had heard some of Rabin's demos

In Memoriam: Kenny Rogers (1938-2020)

March 21, 2020 By Joe Marchese 12 Comments

Kenny Rogers Share Your Love

Last evening, American popular song lost one of its most resonant and reassuring voices when Kenny Rogers died peacefully of natural causes at the age of 81. Rogers' recording career spanned seven decades, from his early singles in the 1950s through his final studio album, 2015's Once Again It's Christmas. He sold over 100 million records worldwide.  It's appropriate that Rogers' last studio recording would be a Christmas album, as he embodied the season's spirit of joy and goodwill throughout

Motown Greatest Hits

Back in March, we filled you in about Universal Japan's plans for Motown's 60th anniversary campaign, which included a series of reissues and a 3-CD, 60-song collection.  We recently reviewed the U.S.' reissue of the definitive Motown: The Complete No. 1s box set.  Now, the U.K. is getting into the act with a different 3-CD, 60-song anthology of its own. Motown: Greatest Hits arrives on August 16.  Like the Japanese set, it boasts 60 classics from the label on three CDs, but the selection is

Let's Have Some Fun: Cherry Red, Robinsongs Celebrate Bar-Kays with "The Definitive Collection"

May 10, 2019 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Bar Kays Definitive Collection

Now in their sixth decade, The Bar-Kays' place in the R&B pantheon is assured.  From the Memphis soul stew of their first single "Soul Finger" in 1967 through the funk-drenched workouts of the 1970s, the common factors have been the band's authenticity, grit, and musicianship.  Now, the full story of the band has been told on Cherry Red and Robinsongs' recent release The Definitive Collection, a 3-CD, 46-song anthology spanning their 1967-1989 recordings on the Stax/Volt and Mercury
