Do Ya, Do Ya Want This Disc? The Move's Transition to Something Electric Comes Alive from Esoteric

February 21, 2025 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

The Move Message from the Country

The final works from British rockers The Move were relatively ignored by everyone, including the band themselves - until listeners started to realize how it marked the trio's transition into a whole new sound. Cherry Red's Esoteric label will revisit the group's fourth album Message from the Country in a newly remastered and expanded package, available February 28. The Move started life as a harmony-rich quintet from Birmingham in the late '60s, enjoying a half dozen Top 10s on the U.K.

On April 28, 1969, Chicago Transit Authority arrived in record stores, introducing the group that would become the world's most influential horn-rock band and one of the most successful bands of all time.  The seven-man ensemble of Robert Lamm, Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, Danny Seraphine, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, and Walter Parazaider, along with producer James William Guercio, offered something for everyone in their sprawling, stunning double-LP debut: big, hook-filled pop singles ("Does

Make Me Smile: Mobile Fidelity Brings "Chicago Transit Authority," "Chicago II" To SACD

February 6, 2015 By Joe Marchese 4 Comments

Chicago II

Does anybody really know what time it is?  Happily, it’s time for Mobile Fidelity to continue its series of limited edition hybrid stereo SACDs for the Chicago catalogue.  MoFi has previously issued 1973’s Chicago VI on SACD and 1984’s Chicago 17 on 24k Gold CD, but now the label has turned back the clock to the very beginning.  And when the very beginning is the one-two punch of 1969’s Chicago Transit Authority and 1970’s Chicago II on SACD, it’s a very good place to start, indeed. Long

"Make room in your heart for a friend," goes the second song on this collection featuring 50 of the never-before-released Lost Transcriptions for Tiffany Music circa 1946-1947. Dark Shadows Over Transylvania: Robert Cobert's Score to "Dan Curtis' Dracula" Arrives On CD

May 15, 2014 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

dan curtis dracula

Since Bram Stoker introduced Count Dracula in 1897, the Transylvanian vampire has captivated audiences in every medium conceivable.  Of course, the visceral possibilities of film has allowed the nightmarish character to leave his mark on generation after generation, most famously in 1931’s Bela Lugosi-starring film.  Much as Universal Pictures produced a string of films following its original, Hammer Films launched its own series of Dracula pictures with 1958’s adaptation starring Christopher

About "Last Night": Expanded Trans-Siberian Orchestra Album to Be Released on Tour

March 9, 2012 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

tsobeethovendeluxecoverartfinal

Christmas isn't anywhere near our minds at Second Disc HQ, but a band typically associated with the season has a reissue coming out next week. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the successful symphonic rock band whose guitar-heavy versions of traditional carols are radio staples at Christmas, have released two non-holiday albums in their almost 20-year history: 2000's Beethoven's Last Night and 2009's Night Castle. Now, with the group playing Beethoven's Last Night in its entirety on a tour that

What kind of year will 2012 be?  If the first batch of releases, slated for January 30 release, from the Edsel label is any indication, there's plenty of rare and well-done music on the way! A three albums-on-two-CDs package collects the entirety of Todd Rundgren's Warner Bros. Friday Feature: "The Transformers: The Movie"

transformers movie new

That crunching, crashing sound you hear is another Transformers movie rolling out into theaters. The series' third installment, Dark of the Moon, features Autobots and Decepticons yet again pummeling each other into scrap metal with the fate of the Earth at stake. While it remains to be seen - at least by this author - if the new film is any worse than the abhorrent Revenge of the Fallen from 2009 (which featured an enemy with a crotch made of wrecking balls, hereafter referred to as

What is Quadio?  That's the question currently being posed by the fine folks over at Rhino.com.  For an answer and some fun interactivity, click here.  But in short, Quadio describes the new series of four-channel audio DVDs (or "Quadradiscs") being introduced by Rhino with the reissue of 1969's Chicago Transit Authority, the first album by the band later known simply as Chicago. This release is a landmark in a number of ways.  For one thing, it signals a new attempt to court the dedicated

Never Gonna Be the Same: A Conversation with Gary Clark of Danny Wilson

May 7, 2025 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Danny Wilson

The best known hit of his band begins with "Everything is wonderful / being here is heavenly..." and perhaps no line better sums up the experience of hearing a song by Gary Clark. The Scottish singer/songwriter formed the trio Danny Wilson with his brother Kit and bassist Ged Grimes in the mid-'80s, eventually scoring a hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1987 and 1988 with the sublime "Mary's Prayer." While it's easy to place Danny Wilson in the same British sophisti-pop continuum that

John Williams Anthology 1

With yesterday being "May the Fourth" and an informal day of celebration for Star Wars fans (even though "orthodox" fans might recognize the original film's release date, May 25, as a holiday of its own!), the time is right to plan a few music reissues related to the film - and one exciting, ambitious new announcement for the catalogue of the series' longtime composer, John Williams. The 93-year-old composer has kept a low profile since the release of his score for the fifth and final Indiana
