Cherry Red's El label has recently turned its attention to two late titans of jazz for a pair of releases. The Cinema of Miles Davis and The Quiet Passion of Bill Evans: Collaborations, Trios and Guest Sessions both focus on the artists' early periods in which they were pushing the envelope and shattering preconceived notions of bop. The Cinema of Miles Davis captures the trumpeter between 1954 and 1961 on a variety of performances either written for films or used in films. Representing the

Andy, Did You Hear About This One? R.E.M. Expands 'Automatic For The People' For 25th Anniversary
R.E.M. have announced details on their latest catalogue title: an expansion of 1992's landmark album Automatic For The People. Following the Athens quartet's commercial floodgates bursting open with the chart-topping Out of Time (1991) and Top 10 singles "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People," R.E.M. initially set out to make a more rock-oriented album but delivered something more intimate and emotionally intense. Part of the record was inspired by the band's advancing age (singer
It's Time for Mistletoe and Holly: Capitol Releases Sinatra's "Ultimate Christmas"

Party Is a Groovy Thing: People's Choice Philly Soul and Funk Collected by BBR
Philadelphia International Records, home of The Sound of Philadelphia, wasn't always the most hospitable label for bands. After all, the label's "house band" MFSB featured some of the finest musicians anywhere, so self-contained units such as Instant Funk, Force of Nature, or even the venerable Soul Survivors inevitably played second fiddle to the vocal groups supported so deftly by MFSB. But of all the Philly International bands, one rose above the rest. People's Choice scored an R&B

Octoberon arrived immediately prior to Gone to Earth in a landmark year for the
The Demon Unearthed: Gene Simmons Plans Massive Box Set
Gene Simmons has never shied away from theatrics--and his newly-announced solo box set is a testament to the power and excess of rock and roll. The Gene Simmons Vault is absolutely what it claims to be: an actual safe (38 pounds!) including the deepest possible dive into the KISS bassist's personal archives, from his first songwriting efforts as a teenager in 1966 to recordings made last year. The set, three years in the making, promises 150 recordings over 10 discs, including "songs I've
Review: Jan and Dean, "Filet of Soul Redux: The Rejected Master Recordings"
Jan and Dean were riding high in 1965. The surf-rock duo was slated to star in a Hollywood film. They had shot a television pilot for ABC, and were preparing to move on from their longtime home of Liberty Records for greener pastures. Standing in the way of their split from Liberty, however, was one last contractually-required album. Berry and Torrence had no intention of giving the label any new material, and didn't want to turn over any live recordings of their hit songs, either. They

Barnum: Backer's Audition finds Coleman and lyricist/librettist Michael Stewart presenting the score to their potential Broadway musical to an enthusiastic audience of potential investors in an Upper East Side apartment. Review: Liza Minnelli, "Results: Expanded 4-Disc Edition"
The list of Liza Minnelli's musical partners reads like a "Who's Who" of popular culture: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Charles Aznavour, Donna Summer, Joel Grey, Chita Rivera, and of course, her mother Judy Garland, to name a few. Yet one of Minnelli's most cherished collaborations was also one of her most unexpected. 1989's Results was the superstar's first studio album in over a decade, and teamed her with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, a.k.a. the British dance-pop duo Pet Shop Boys.

Hokus Pokus: Insane Clown Posse Reissue Classic Joker's Card As Expanded Edition
Detroit duo Insane Clown Posse exist in many minds as a broad-based punchline, which is kind of a shame. Despite the goofy, shlocky nature of their music and image, like something out of a nightmarish, coulrophobic slasher film, the hatchet-wielding, Faygo-spraying antics of Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J have sold millions of records and endeared the group to their loyal blue-collar fanbase of Juggalos. (The controversy they've drummed up still continues, with a protest march on Washington, D.C.

Savage Young Dü captures the band in studio and in concert from their humble beginnings in 1979 through the release of their debut studio album Everything Falls Apart in 1983--before their fateful signing by SST Records and their increasing awareness among the indie faithful. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe's 10th and 11th studio albums continued an still-unbroken streak of U.K. Top 10 efforts. Yes' lead single, "Love Etc.," was a British Top 20 hit and broke a U.S. record for most Billboard No. 1 dance hits by a duo or group. Legendary
