Dean Torrence The Teammates

This fall, Omnivore will be revisiting the back pages of two California artists with whom the label has become associated: Dean Torrence and Buck Owens. Back in 2017, Omnivore issued Filet of Soul Redux: The Rejected Master Recordings from Jan Berry and Dean Torrence, the innovative surf-rock duo and Beach Boys pals who transformed the sound of SoCal pop. But Dean was always much more than "just" one-half of that pioneering musical pair.  As a graphic designer, Torrence won the Grammy Award

Jan and Dean Filet of Soul Redux

Jan and Dean were riding high in 1965.  The surf-rock duo was slated to star in a Hollywood film.  They had shot a television pilot for ABC, and were preparing to move on from their longtime home of Liberty Records for greener pastures.  Standing in the way of their split from Liberty, however, was one last contractually-required album.  Berry and Torrence had no intention of giving the label any new material, and didn't want to turn over any live recordings of their hit songs, either.  They

Jan and Dean Filet of Soul Redux

Omnivore Recordings is heading to Surf City...and everybody's gonna have some fun!  The label is presenting an oldie but a goodie from Jan and Dean, as you've never heard it before.  On September 1, Omnivore will premiere the original, rejected version of the legendary surf duo's 1966 album Filet of Soul in a package featuring the participation of Dean Torrence himself. In 1965, Jan Berry and Dean Torrence were eager to extricate themselves from their deal with Liberty Records, for whom they

Here Today The Songs of Brian Wilson

The title of Ace Records' recent collection is Here Today! The Songs of Brian Wilson, after one of those famous Wilson songs off The Beach Boys' 1966 Pet Sounds.  But the fact of the matter is - as this enjoyably diverse set proves over the course of its 25 tracks - Brian Wilson's music is not only here today, but will be here for many tomorrows. Unlike Ace's 2003 volume Pet Projects: The Brian Wilson Productions, this anthology concentrates on Brian as songwriter.  But there are a couple of
