Let’s Dance: “Legacy” Collects David Bowie’s Best Singles and More

BUY 2-CD SET FROM AMAZON.COM

Roughly two years ago, David Bowie announced the release of Nothing Has Changed, a career-spanning retrospective available in 2-CD, 3-CD and 2-LP configurations from Columbia/Legacy in the United States and Parlophone in the United Kingdom.  Since then, much has changed.  Most tragically, Bowie passed away earlier this year at the age of 69, just two days after the release of his final album, Blackstar.  Now, a new compilation follows in the footsteps of Nothing Has Changed, bringing the artist’s history up through his final recordings.  Legacy arrives on CD from Parlophone (on both sides of the Atlantic) on November 11, with the double-vinyl version following on January 6, offering forty classic tracks from “Space Oddity” through the final song on Blackstar, “I Can’t Give Everything Away.”  A single-CD, 20-track iteration will also be released.  Legacy follows last week’s release of Who Can I Be Now? 1974-1976, the second in a series of Bowie box sets, and comes after the October 21 release of the original cast recording of Bowie’s musical Lazarus.

Though the tracks on Legacy are familiar, many are included in their single versions including “Starman,” “The Jean Genie,” “Young Americans,” “Golden Years,” “Heroes,” “Ashes to Ashes,” “Fashion,”  “Let’s Dance,” “China Girl,” and “Modern Love.”  Numerous later tracks are heard in their radio edits, among them “Absolute Beginners,” “Jump They Say,” “Little Wonder,” “I’m Afraid of Americans (V1 Edit),” “Thursday’s Child,” “Slow Burn,” “Everyone Says Hi,” “New Killer Star,” and the two tracks from Blackstar, “Lazarus” and “I Can’t Give Everything Away.”

Bowie’s collaborations with Queen (“Under Pressure”), Mick Jagger (“Dancing in the Street”), The Pet Shop Boys (“Hallo, Spaceboy”), and The Pat Metheny Group (“This Is Not America”) can all be found on Legacy.  The 2-CD version is sequenced chronologically, while the single-disc version is not.  Both editions feature one previously unreleased track: a 2016 remix of 1971’s “Life on Mars?” by producer Ken Scott.

Legacy follows not just Nothing Has Changed but other Bowie anthologies including Best of Bowie and the recently-reissued Changesonebowie (not to mention Changestwobowie and the all-encompassing Changesbowie).  This single-centric look at David Bowie’s remarkable musical career arrives from Parlophone on November 11 on CD, with the vinyl version following in January!  You can peruse the track listings below!

  1. Hi .. what another Bowie compilation … wow .. but does anyone when the promised 2016 individual cd remasters of “Diamond dogs” and “Young Americans” are coming out . .they’re the only ones I’m after from his recent boxset .. cheers.

    1. I don’t see the point as Nothing Has Changed the 3 CD Disc was a fantastic compilation of his work. I would love to see a box set of unreleased material spanning his entire career or at least from the early 80’s on.

  2. No “Tonight” with Tina Turner? Unforgivable. Too many other omissions as well. Scary Monsters, Wild Is The Wind, Cat People (Putting Out Fire) to name just a few.

    1. And no “The laughing gnome” shame .. a missed opportunity there .. actually on a good night it’s not a bad track ..
