News Round-Up: Springsteen’s “Darkness” Doc, Motown Treasures and Porcupine Tree Rarities

  • A new Springsteen documentary, to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, is the latest piece of The Boss’ upcoming Darkness on the Edge of Town box set. The Promise: The Making of “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” directed by Thom Zimny (who directed the documentary in the Born to Run box), will feature unseen footage from the album sessions in 1976-1978 and has been confirmed to be a part of the box, which is due in time for this Christmas.
  • Here’s a fine surprise: Motown has unveiled another volume of its U.K.-based rarities line A Cellarful of Motown. The two-disc compilation will feature some 50 unreleased gems from the fabled Motown vaults, including cuts by Marvin Gaye, The Miracles, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops and The Temptations. It’s available in the U.K. on August 23 and has a Stateside date of September 7.
  • British prog-rockers Porcupine Tree are reissuing one of their rarest albums: a B-sides compilation simply titled Recordings. First released in limited quantities in 2001, this set collects tracks from the Stupid Dream (1999) and Lightbulb Sun (2000) eras. Look for it September 7.

Track listings for Cellarful Vol. 4 and Recordings are found after the jump.

  1. With the much-anticipated release of a commemorative box set for Darkness on the Edge of Town slated for this Christmas, Bruce Springsteen’s classic record is getting renewed attention in the music world. Details on the project are scarce; however, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Steven Van Zandt mentioned that about 10 unreleased songs will be included in the box set. Fans are surely hungry for any and all material they can get from the 1978 recording sessions and subsequent tour.

For our own preview of what’s to come, we contacted Dick Wingate, who was intimately involved in the launch and marketing of the album and tour. He offers an insider’s view of what the Darkness era meant to Bruce and the band, while painting an often-humorous behind-the-scenes account of some of the tour’s highlights…check out the book The Light in Darkness, which one fan said, “… would also make a great companion piece to the much anticipated commemorative Darkness box set…”
