Short Takes: Dylan Bonuses to Come with Bootlegs, Bernstein Box on the Way

September 2, 2010 By Mike Duquette 8 Comments

A pair of notes from some Sony properties today: one focuses on a bonus with Bob Dylan's newest Bootleg Series release, the other is a big box coming from Sony devoted to one of America's greatest composers.

Apparently, those who purchase The Bootleg Series Vol. 9: The Witmark Demos 1962-1964 from Amazon will get a bonus disc recorded at Brandeis University's First Annual Folk Festival in 1963. The reel-to-reel tape source had been in the collection of Rolling Stone co-founder Ralph Gleason. Read the article at Rolling Stone for more info, including a recent live set that almost became the ninth entry in The Bootleg Series and some other discussed Dylan catalogue titles.

In other Sony news, it looks like Sony may be releasing yet another oversized box set for the holidays: a set chronicling all of Leonard Bernstein's symphonies recorded with The New York Philharmonic. There's an Amazon listing for it, but this blog post mentions that it'll be a 60-disc affair. Not sure where that number came from just yet, but hopefully more details will surface soon on this set, reported for an October 12 release.

Hit the jump to read the track list for the Dylan bonus disc.

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Can Canadians get the Dylan bonus disc from Amazon.ca? These articles are never very clear about the availability.

Basically it says that the disc will be available in different countries through yet undecided retailers.

Definitely getting this from Amazon! Also, I'm hoping that the Supper Club '93 show (mentioned in the Rolling Stone article) happens. It's a common bootleg, but it's worth releasing. Given two decades of the Never Ending Tour, it's unfortunate that we've never gotten any official releases from it.

Also, I am STOKED to learn that the 1976 Hard Rain TV special will eventually be released! I've always wanted to see that. Make it happen, Sony!

This page http://www.searchingforagem.com/Misc/FieldRecs.htm details several dozen live tracks from the Never Ending Tour that have popped up officially on comps, imports, promos and as B-sides over the years--and there's also the 1995 "MTV Unplugged" set.

I have noticed that Amazon doesn't say anything about the bonus disc yet.
