Steve Gadd Band, Steve Gadd Band (BFM Jazz) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Veteran drummer Steve Gadd follows up 2016's acclaimed Way Back Home with his band's fourth album - a new collection of songs from the group including Gadd, trumpeter/flugelhornist Walt Fowler, keyboardist Kevin Hays, bassist Jimmy Johnson, and guitarist Michael Landau.  Gadd's son Duke even joins in for a handful of tracks.  The set's lone cover, "Temporary Fault," pays homage to its author, the late guitar hero Allan Holdsworth.  There's also one vocal, from Hays on his own ballad, "Spring Song."  For fine musicianship and killer grooves, look no further.

The Claudettes, Dance Scandal at the Gymnasium! (Yellow Dog) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

The Chicago group unveils their third album produced by Mark Neill (Black Keys) and introduces vocalist Berit Ulseth's smoky stylings.  Dance Scandal at the Gymnasium! blends crunchy riffs with rhythm and blues, sixties-style pop and soul, and plenty of attitude.  The sound is raw and immediate - with a piano, bass guitar and drums core - thanks to the band's use of vintage equipment and instruments.  This Scandal boasts punk spirit, earworm melodies, and a neo-retro sound that's loaded with appeal.

The Langley Schools Music Project, Innocence and Despair (Bar None) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

In case you missed it: A cult classic if there ever was one, The Langley Schools Music Project was recorded in 1976-1977 and not released until 25 years later - when elementary schoolchildren's (ages 9-12) choral renditions of then-hit songs by David Bowie, Neil Diamond, The Beach Boys, Barry Manilow, Carpenters, Eagles, and others could be viewed through a new lens.  The children's pure vocals evoked a haunting melancholy underneath the surface of these pop favorites, turning these homemade recordings from four British Columbia schools into a cornerstone of outsider music.  Bowie considered himself a fan.  Intrigued?  Innocence and Despair is available on 2 LPs with new packaging and extended liner notes or CD with an eight-page booklet now.
