On January 8, Parlophone will celebrate what would have been David Bowie's 74th birthday with a special 7" single featuring his covers of John Lennon's "Mother" and Bob Dylan's "Tryin' To Get To Heaven." "Mother" had been prepared for a Tony Visconti-led John Lennon tribute album that went unreleased, while "Tryin' To Get To Heaven" was recorded at Sony Music Studios during the mixing sessions for the LiveAndWell.com compilation (itself recently announced for release, find out more here). The Dylan cover will be featured on the physical edition, appropriately enough, in a "Single Edit."
The new 7" single will be released in a limited edition of 8,147 copies, including 1,000 cream-colored copies. The color vinyl copies will be exclusive to DavidBowie.com and Rhino.com, while the remaining standard vinyl editions will be available across retailers. The tracks will also be available through digital download and streaming services.
Pre-order details are not yet available, but we'll keep you updated with any news. In the meantime, here's more information about the new single, courtesy of the label!

dear Sam, Clearly, marketers have their ways, but I'm wondering if you can explain "(t) new 7″ single will be released in a limited edition of 8,147 copies"; could it be that the releas is a 8.1 (January 8 as usually expressed in the UK and the 47 is a reverse of the Bowie birth years?
Joe Marchese says
As it would be written in his birthplace of the U.K., Bowie's birthdate was indeed 8.1.47 (8 January 1947) hence the 8,147 copies of this single.
