1972 was a banner year for T. Rex's Marc Bolan. The glam rock pioneer was riding high thanks to the success of 1971's chart-topping Electric Warrior and its hit singles "Get It On" and "Jeepster," and would continue his streak of hits with The Slider (No. 4 in the U.K.) and two more No. 1s, "Metal Guru" and "Telegram Sam." Before the year was out, T. Rex would play in both the U.S. and U.K., appear regularly on the BBC, and star in the concert film Born to Boogie produced and directed by Ringo Starr under the Apple Films banner. The band notched another pair of No. 2 smashes, "Children of the Revolution" and "Solid Gold Easy Action," savoring the wave of T. Rextasy. Now, Edsel is celebrating Bolan's legacy with T. Rex's 1972, a new box set available in 5 CD, 6LP, and 2 LP "highlights" editions.
The all-encompassing 1972 includes The Slider album, Live at Wembley: The Matinee Show (plus two previously unreleased 1972 mixes from The Evening Show), an expanded Born to Boogie: The Soundtrack Album (featuring Elton John and Ringo Starr), Bolan's U.S. Radio Sessions, T. Rex on the BBC in 1972 (boasting a previously unreleased version of "Telegram Sam" from the Christmas Top of the Pops), non-LP B-sides, and the T. Rex Fan Club 1972 Christmas flexidisc. All tracks are present on both the CD box and the 180-gram colored vinyl set. The 2LP highlights edition, pressed on 140-gram white vinyl, features highlights from the Wembley show, U.S. and U.K. radio sessions, and bonus extras including highlights from the Born to Boogie soundtrack.
The accompanying booklets (44 pages in the CD set, 24 pages at 12x12 size in the vinyl version) contains a 1,600-word introduction by Electric Warrior/The Slider producer Tony Visconti, and a new 12,000-word essay by Bolan biographer Mark Paytress, author of Bolan: The Rise and Fall of a 20th Century Superstar. The booklets also contain previously unpublished photos taken by Keith Morris during 1972.
1972 is due on April 22 in all formats from Edsel. Tony Visconti has signed 1,000 CD boxes and 1,000 LP boxes which are also currently available. You'll find pre-order links and the complete track listing below!

I'll try the two lps highlights. I know that Ringo was a big fan of him, so should be interesting

One of the coolest, most hip and unique sounds ever came from T-Rex.

Hot love changed my world
Tim says
Not a lot new here if you have the Born To Boogie set except maybe the US radio recordings for a Rex fan. Still, great stuff and all in one place!
Putte Seittonen says
Impressive packing, I'm sure, but there is nothing really "new "for the die hard fans like me. It seems very unlikely that I'm going to get this one to my collection of Bolan/ T.Rex. But for those who are not so familiar to this material of lesser known tracks, this release is very good one.
Carl Ewens says
It's seems odd that Tony Visconti did not think of doing a new remix of The Slider, as I recently bought albums by The Beatles in boxed sets that included fantastic new remixes, really bringing the albums into new focus for the fans and audio enthusiasts. I think this will be the already released Visconti remaster. It is a missed opportunity really, as I've always wanted to hear Rock On remixed , with the outro saxophones mixed-up and the primitively played 'one-finger' keyboards mixed-down. Oh well. I'll still buy it anyway cos I love T.REX and I'll get the signed version too, cos I think Tony was the 5th member of T.REX really... he's great!
