The end of the year always brings a deluge of news and releases for archival film score fans. While October is nearly over and has had its share of killer announcements, we'd first like to shine a light on some of the biggest titles released back in September!
La-La Land had a busy ninth month of the year, featuring a lot of other long-running partnerships and favorites from the label discography. First, there's the seventh and final release in the label's Star Trek: The Original Series - The 1701 Collection product line. Here, all the music from the label's 2012 box set of music from the iconic sci-fi series has been broken out in smaller installments (all limited to 1701 copies), with new packaging by Goldwasser and new liner notes by Jeff Bond. The seventh set offers some of the most memorable music from original series composer Alexander Courage (including unaired pilot "The Cage" and first-produced regular episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before") plus notable episodes with scores by Gerald Fried ("Amok Time") and Sol Kaplan ("The Doomsday Machine").
La-La Land has also expanded another score from the Friday the 13th series: Harry Manfredini's music for the fifth gory installment, released in 1985. While the film was one of the least critically and commercially successful in the series, Manfredini's work for Jason Voorhees' latest bloody killing spree earned high marks from fans. This new, composer-approved remix by engineer Jerry Lambert features unissued material and a package by Goldwasser that features liner notes by producer/editor James Satterwhite. (Goldwasser and Satterwhite produced the disc, and Scott Saslow designed the album cover.) Finally, LLL's done a limited vinyl pressing of Nino Rota's film score to the 1972 classic The Godfather. Different from the original album presentation and originally released on CD for the film's 50th anniversary in 2022, the 2LP set is limited to 1500 copies apiece - half on black and white "tuxedo" vinyl, and half on cannoli cream and "Moe Green" discs.
Varese Sarabande recently issued two eclectic titles in their venerated, limited edition CD Club series. First up is John Debney's score to 1995's Sudden Death. Here, Belgian action star Jean-Claude Van Damme (working again with Timecop director Peter Hyams) portrays a fire marshal for the Pittsburgh Civic Arena pitted against a group of terrorists who take the vice president hostage while he attends the final game of the Stanley Cup. Sure! Debney's percussive score is generously expanded beyond the original Varese album, and liner notes from Daniel Schweiger feature new quotes from composer and director. The other CD Club title is a premiere of a Jerry Goldsmith score to the twin-led psychological thriller The Other (1972). Considered one of the most offbeat horror works by the beloved composer, it's been restored to disc by mix/mastering engineer Chris Malone and producer Mike Matessino, complete with liner notes by Tim Grieving.
Over at Intrada comes an expanded latter-day Disney score and an obscure '80s thriller making its debut on CD. Though they'd had a successful partnership with Pixar, Walt Disney Pictures made a computer-animated flick of their own with 2000's Dinosaur, a dramatic tale of an Iguanodon raised by lemurs who joins a migrating herd after his home is destroyed by a meteor. (The project actually combined CGI dinosaur models with live-action background plates.) One of the top-grossing films of the year, the film earned applause for James Newton Howard's expressive score, using choral and orchestral flourishes and featuring a cue ("The Egg Travels") that became a mainstay of family film trailers. The 2CD program features the film score, unreleased extras and the film's original soundtrack album program, which ran nearly an hour. It's all presented from original multi-track masters, remixed by Chris Malone and assembled by Douglass Fake - one of the last projects the Intrada founder completed before his passing earlier this year.
Intrada has also prepped a premiere release from French composer Frédéric Talgorn: his very first film score to 1989's Edge of Sanity, a horrifying adaptation of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde with a dash of Jack the Ripper mythology added for good measure. (Anthony Perkins, no stranger to playing psychotic killers in three Psycho films, led the cast.) Talgorn, a classically-trained composer/conductor, spun dark melodic themes for his first motion picture assignment - one that would open doors for him on assignments like Robot Jox (1992) and The Temp (1993) as well as music for the 1992 Olympics. He produces this album presentation, sourced from a recently-discovered DAT in his archive, with Doug Schwartz remastering.
Finally, the team at Music Box Records has recently remastered and expanded Gabriel Yared's score to The Talented Mr. Ripley for its 25th anniversary. This adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel, written and directed by Anthony Minghella of The English Patient fame, stars Matt Damon as a charismatic con artist who enters a life of extravagance and mistaken identity with an American playboy in Italy. The knockout cast included Jude Law (in an Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning role), Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Yared's longtime collaboration with Minghella yielded this Oscar-nominated score, richly evoking its late '50s period theme and offering a haunting, suspenseful theme for its title character. (It was even set to lyrics for the film's soundtrack, as sung by the late Sinéad O'Connor.) This double-disc set includes a host of unreleased alternate cues and demos, plus 16 pages of liner notes by Daniel Schweiger that draw from new interviews with Yared, Minghella and editor Walter Murch. The set is limited to 2000 copies.
