Spring is in the air, making now the perfect time to check out some killer recent archival soundtracks released by our friends at La-La Land Records, Intrada, Quartet and Varese Sarabande – plus a great recent score with some deep musical history that felt worth sharing, too. La-La Land shone brightly with new releases in March and April, most notably their latest restoration of a James Bond film score! This time, it’s John Barry’s music to Diamonds Are Forever, the seventh film in the long-running spy series based on Ian Fleming’s novels. For…

Super Sequel Soundtracks Are La-La Land’s Black Friday Focus for 2024
Before announcing their typically grandiose year-end slate of archival soundtrack titles, there were rumblings in the film score fan community that La-La Land – whose release schedule offered everything from Star Trek to James Bond to the first Steven Spielberg-John Williams collaboration in 2024 – might do things a little differently. It turns out those rumors were correct: ahead of their usual Black Friday blowout, the label has instead announced three titles approved for license from major labels and studios and ready to manufacture for the top of November. Soundtrack Watch: Quartet Reissues ‘Cutthroat Island,’ Intrada Expands ‘Something Wicked’
With Bond back in action at La-La Land Records, some of our favorite soundtrack reissue labels are also starting the new year off with a bang! Quartet Records has just reissued a ’90s favorite score on CD, while Intrada has revisited an early classic by James Horner with an all-new approach. The name Cutthroat Island would shiver the timbers of any Hollywood enthusiast in the mid-’90s. Treat Every Day Like Christmas: Varese Expands the Scores to “Elf” and “Blue Velvet”
Varese Sarabande has recently released two deluxe soundtracks to fit two very different moods. The first might put you in the Christmas spirit with an expanded presentation of John Debney’s score to the modern holiday classic film Elf. The other will take you on a far darker journey with an expanded look at Angelo Badalamenti’s score to Blue Velvet. First up is the deluxe edition of the score to 2003’s Elf. The Jon Favreau-directed film starred Will Ferrell in his first lead role after leaving Saturday Night Live. He plays Buddy, a…
Soundtrack Watch: Quartet’s New “Thing,” Varese Dives Deep with “SeaQuest DSV” and “The Running Man”
A new remaster of a classic soundtrack album and two new expansions are on display in our latest soundtrack-round-up. For the first time in nearly 40 years, Quartet Records is remastering Ennio Morricone’s score to John Carpenter’s sci-fi classic The Thing. An adaptation of the John W. Campbell Jr. short story Who Goes There? (first filmed as 1951’s The Thing From Another World), The Thing features an ensemble cast portraying researchers at an Antarctic outpost who encounter an alien creature that can take the form of its hosts. The film’s combination of…
