The Record Store Day round-up marches on! After covering in detail the vinyl offerings from Universal Music Group, Legacy Recordings, Rhino Records, BMG, Craft Recordings, Real Gone Music, Omnivore and U.K. labels Cooking Vinyl and Demon Music Group, we've still got a few things to highlight...notably, the work of labels who are serving one of Record Store Day's least-served fans.
There are plenty of business and financial reasons why some Record Store Day titles are limited solely to vinyl, but we at The Second Disc will never stop banging the drum for those who still collect and listen to music on CD! It's still the most portable, high-fidelity, digitally-convertible physical music format; typically the best way to listen to archival bonus material; and most of all, just a personal favorite. The list of RSD-exclusive CDs is always quite small; as far as major catalogue titles, there's really just one: the unreleased live-in-studio David Bowie set that was the first title announced for release on Saturday, April 12.
Some labels understand the struggle, though, and this year, 10 of the unreleased RSD exclusives coming to vinyl this year - titles from Real Gone Music, Omnivore, Craft, Rhino and Demon - are getting widespread CD releases around the time these LPs will be available! It's a cause worth celebrating in its own post: look below for descriptions, release dates and pre-order links. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.)
Jackie DeShannon, Love Forever: Demo Recordings 1966-1968 (Real Gone Music, 2025) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The genre-blending West Coast sound of Jackie DeShannon was a shining point for American pop in the '60s. But the singer also blazed a trail as a songwriter, penning much of own material. (Sure, her biggest hits - "What the World Needs Now" and "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" - weren't from her pen, but she'd go on to write smashes for others, too, like The Searchers' "When You Walk Into the Room" and Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes," which netted DeShannon a Grammy Award for Song of the Year. Love Forever: Demo Recordings 1966-1968 is the first collection devoted to DeShannon's time as a staff songwriter for Metric Music, where some of her most moving compositions were written. Ten of the album's 16 tracks are heard here for the first time. This one will follow Record Store Day by a few weeks, coming to stores on CD from May 9.

Vince Guaraldi Trio, Jazz Impressions of A Boy Named Charlie Brown (Alternate Takes) (Fantasy/Craft, 2025)
One of the most exciting RSD releases around these parts is a color vinyl from Craft Recordings offering 14 unreleased outtakes from the Vince Guaraldi Trio's sessions recording for the unreleased documentary A Boy Named Charlie Brown, which spawned a 1964 album that became the pianist's first of many soundtracks for specials starring Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts characters (including the following year's landmark A Charlie Brown Christmas, which reused A Boy Named Charlie Brown's immortal "Linus and Lucy"). The recent, belated vault clearing of Guaraldi's discography isn't limited to one format, though: those 14 tracks, plus two more previously released gems, serve as the bonus disc to a newly remastered and expanded edition of the original album, which will be available from Craft on April 4. Learn all about it here!
Françoise Hardy, En Vogue: Best of 1962-1967 (Omnivore OVCD-582, 2025) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
A pivotal figure of the French yé-yé genre, Françoise Hardy's early material for the Disques Vogue beguiled audiences far beyond France or even Europe, and time has only underlined the allure of her voice. This 24-track collection, released in Europe by Legacy Recordings last fall after Hardy's passing in June, has been licensed by Omnivore for a double-vinyl release on Record Store Day, and will be available on CD the following week on April 18.

Robert Hunter, Tiger Rose Rarities (Rhino)
One of the most celebrated lyricists of his generation thanks to a long association with the Grateful Dead, Robert Hunter started putting out albums of his own in earnest in the mid-'70s. His second, 1975's Tiger Rose, featured contributions from members of that band (including Mickey Hart, Donna Jean Godchaux and Jerry Garcia, who also produced) plus members of Jefferson Starship and New Riders of the Purple Sage. It's being expanded on March 21 for its 50th anniversary, with a standalone vinyl release as well, so you can get the nine unreleased alternate takes being released for RSD as Tiger Rose Rarities as part of that collection well ahead of the big day. The Mission, Neverland (30th Anniversary Edition) (Edsel EDSL0239 (U.K.), 2025) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
One of the more unexpected reissues this spring, 1995's Neverland is not the best-known of The Mission's albums; at this point, frontman Wayne Hussey and drummer Mick Brown were the sole classic members of the Gothic rock group still participating, and they'd briefly wrap it up within a year or so. But this 2CD reissue, greatly expanded from the complementary double vinyl edition Edsel's putting out for Record Store Day, offers the definitive take on the album, newly remastered with a baker's dozen of B-sides and single tracks selected by Hussey himself. This release will trail Record Store Day by more than a month, arriving on May 30.

Pixies, Bossanova and Trompe le Monde - Live (Demon/Edsel) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
(Mostly) reunited from their original incarnation for 20 years and counting, the Pixies have now released as many albums from that second period as they did during their original, influential 1987-1991 run. But the group - frontman Black Francis, guitarist Joey Santiago, drummer David Lovering and newest bassist Emma Richardson - haven't shied away from playing classic material, as this new 2CD set showcases. Taken from their 15-date European tour last summer, it's a live reconstruction of 1990's Bossanova and 1991's Trompe le Monde; it'll be available the week after Record Store Day, on April 18.

The Rembrandts, L.P. (Expanded Edition) (Omnivore OVCD-584, 2025) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The jangly L.A. duo of Phil Solem and Danny Wilde - both former members of short-lived power-pop outfit Great Buildings - actually had some measure of chart success in the early '90s. But sometimes no one tells you life was gonna be this way, and their original material was largely overshadowed by the maddeningly catchy "I'll Be There for You," the theme to the blockbuster NBC sitcom Friends for a decade. Its popularity (and status as a hidden-in-plain-sight track on third album L.P.) belies the fact that The Rembrandts were (and are!) quite good; this 30th anniversary remastered and expanded edition of that album, featuring four demos (three of which are unreleased) is a solid reminder. It, too, will hit CD a week after its Record Store Day release.

Talking Heads, Live on Tour '78 (Sire/Rhino, 2025) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Moving forward from last year's deluxe edition of Talking Heads: 77, Rhino next releases a remastered version of a show the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers put on at Cleveland's Agora Ballroom at the end of 1978, in promotion of that year's sophomore release More Songs About Buildings and Food. The set was released on vinyl a few months later as part of Warner Bros.' Live on Tour promotional series, but this edition, working from the original analogue tapes, unearths a previously unreleased version of "Thank You for Sending Me An Angel." This one is set to reach stores April 11, meaning you can possibly pick up a copy if you're out for Record Store Day!

Mike, thank you for your support of the CD format.
Wow good!! I love RSD vinyl exclusives, but i do NOT like buying a title then finding out it is getting a CD release later on...let alone expanded...so this advance info affects the choices i make in which titles to buy from the list...as it does get QUITE expensive!! Thank you muchly!!
Thank you for the update!
Yes, I'd say thank you too for your cd support..the T.Rex one looks good...glad to see rhat the cd hasn't disappeared..just finished playing one that's 33 years old from Chris Rea and it still sounds great, no crackles or scratches..long may they be produced..
I collect Chris Rea myself...have almost his whole catalogue now, only pieces missing for me now are the 2008 box "Return of the Hofner Blue Notes", the 2016 live album deluxe "The Road To Hell And Back" & the 2 versions of 1996's "La Passione"...the original with the Shirley Bassey collab songs & the 2015 boxset without but with unreleased bonus material & DVDs & book...yes i have the five 2019 expanded 2CD remasters & the 11CD/1 DVD "Earbook" "Blue Guitars"...
