Couldn’t Care More: Fine Young Cannibals to Drive You Crazy with Multi-Format Compilation

Four decades after their brief but pivotal run of success on each side of the Atlantic in the mid-to-late ’80s, Fine Young Cannibals come back for a few more bites in the form of a sprawling compilation/box set.
Arriving from London Records on November 21, FYC40 will reintroduce audiences to the Birmingham trio behind “Johnny Come Home,” “She Drives Me Crazy” and “Good Thing” on a multi-disc set that’s available on CD or vinyl. The most comprehensive version spans four CDs and a DVD, offering expanded editions of 1985’s Fine Young Cannibals and 1989’s The Raw & The Cooked, B-sides, remixes, music videos and live performances. (These are, of course, different track lists than the 2CD expansions of both albums issued in 2020.) Nine of the tracks, including vintage and new remixes, are previously unreleased. A 2CD edition offers an overview of hits and remixes – some of which are different to what’s on the 4CD/1DVD set, including the unreleased material. A crystal clear vinyl version offers the first dozen tracks from the 2CD version, and a black double vinyl includes all 18 cuts from the first disc of the 2CD set plus a side of remixes – most of which are edited versions of longer cuts on the previous sets, and many of which are previously unreleased and not on the other configurations. Phew! (And that doesn’t even cover the CD single of mostly unreleased “Johnny Come Home” remixes from 1990, available with purchases made on the band’s official store!) The deluxe set includes liner notes by Andrew Harrison and John Earls, while the standard sets seem to only feature notes by Harrison.
Such a spread does its part to chronicle the brief, intense popularity of FYC, one of two groups formed from the ashes of the post-punk/ska group The (English) Beat. (Frontmen Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger started General Public.) Guitarist Andy Cox and bassist David Steele joined forces with ska band veteran Roland Gift, whose versatile voice – from Otis Redding-style soul grit to Prince-ly falsetto – cut through the literal hundreds of demo tapes the duo solicited. Though a record deal was hard-fought, FYC would strike pay dirt in England with the live favorite “Johnny Come Home,” a ska-flavored tune that would reach the Top 10 in the U.K.; a dramatic cover of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” matched its predecessor at No. 8.
A third British hit, a No. 9 cover of The Buzzcocks’ “Ever Fallen in Love,” was commissioned for the soundtrack to the Jonathan Demme film Something Wild (1986), and the group would appear in Barry Levinson’s Tin Men (1987) – all of which led up to the 1989 release of the group’s dance-focused The Raw & The Cooked. Sessions included collaborations with Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads, Julian Mendelsohn and Paisley Park engineer David Z (brother of former Prince and The Revolution drummer Bobby Z). It was David’s minimalist production on the single “She Drives Me Crazy” that gave Fine Young Cannibals their big break in the United States; it and “Good Thing” (featuring a rollicking piano lick from Jools Holland of Squeeze) would both top the pop charts in America. Despite the near U.S. Top 10 placement of third single “Don’t Look Back,” Fine Young Cannibals were not much longer for the music world. Outside of new single “The Flame” for a 1996 hits collection, Gift, Cox and Steele haven’t worked together since. (Gift has acted on film and television, and has performed several times under the FYC moniker.)
All formats of FYC40 are detailed below, with pre-order links for Amazon (as an affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases) and the band’s official store (which comes with the bonus “Johnny Come Home” CD single). You can also hear one of the new remixes, a new take on “Ever Fallen in Love” by DJ Q, below. FYC 40 is available November 21.

I can’t believe how many times they have suckered me into buying this materiel. But I am still gonna buy it LOL.
As great as the 4CD/1DVD bookbox is, it’s STILL not complete!! It does not have the 4 then-new tracks from the final era of “The Finest”, although the standard single version of “The Flame” is on the 2CD & clear vinyl 2LP…and nothing by Two Men, A Drum Machine & A Trumpet either…there is also a limited BluRay audio of “The Raw & The Cooked” with Atmos & other mixes by David Kotzen & bonus tracks with the 3 singles from the 1985 debut album & “The Flame”…besides these, may have to get other things for the missing pieces…
Where is the Something Wild soundtrack version of Ever Fallen in Love? You gotta be crazy to shell out money for this.
As it’s my favorite FYC song, I’m a little bummed that the “Caught In A Dub” mix of “Suspicious Minds” wasn’t included somewhere. As far as I know, that’s still not available on CD.
It is on cd
