Ace Records’ ongoing Black America Sings series gets a second helping of classic tunes by Bob Dylan on a new compilation available this week.

Highway of Diamonds: Black America Sings Bob Dylan, available January 30 in Ace’s native U.K. (and a week later in America), offers 20 compositions from the Nobel Prize-winning songwriter recast for soul, blues and gospel acts including The Staple Singers, Nina Simone, Harry Belafonte, Billy Preston, Natalie Cole, Solomon Burke, Merry Clayton, Sarah Vaughan, Aaron Neville and more. The collection, available on CD or two LPs, includes informative song/track liner notes from Tony Rounce.

In a testament to the Dylan songbook’s incredible reach, nearly no two songs featured are from similar albums, spanning from bookending tracks from 1963’s The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (“A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” as sung by The Staple Singers in 1973; a 1966 take on “Blowin’ in the Wind” from gospel act The Caravans) all the way to 1989’s Oh Mercy (a 2012 rendition of “Everything is Broken” by Bettye LaVette). Only “Blowin’ in the Wind” repeats from the previous volume, 2010’s How Many Roads. Along with contemporary and retrospective versions of the songs, several – like Odetta’s version of “Baby I’m in the Mood for You” and Belafonte’s “Tomorrow is a Long Time” – even predate released versions by the man himself. Dylan – long a champion for social justice in his music, who performed at the 1963 March on Washington (where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his best-known “I have a dream” speech) and explored elements of gospel music in his late ’70s/early ’80s exploration of Christianity – has his songs well-met by the caliber and breadth of acts and voices here, who offer unique interpretations and alternate angles on a body of work that is still galvanizing listeners today.
