Barbara Lewis, The Many Grooves of Barbara Lewis (Real Gone Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Real Gone Music)

After five albums for Atlantic, Barbara Lewis moved to Stax imprint Enterprise for this 1970 album.  Produced by Ollie McLaughlin, the LP features a grittier sound than Lewis’ earlier efforts and includes covers of such songs as Clarence Carter’s “Slip Away” and Michel Legrand and Alan & Marilyn Bergman’s “The Windmills of Your Mind.”  The Many Grooves would prove to be Lewis’ final album as she stepped back from the public spotlight only reemerging later in the decade when Yvonne Elliman topped the Easy Listening charts in 1977 with a cover of Lewis’ composition “Hello Stranger.”  Real Gone’s new release marks the first ever vinyl reissue of the album and is an all-analog pressing.  It comes on black vinyl or purple PET plastic vinyl.

Ernie Hines, Electrified (Real Gone Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Soul musician Hines recorded this album for Stax imprint We Produce in 1972.  Produced by Jo Bridges and Tom Nixon, the LP has become a cult classic over the years due in large part to the song “Our Generation.”  Hines’ gospel-infused version of Leon Moore’s socially-conscious song was sampled in the 1992 hit “Straighten It Out” and then covered by John Legend and the Roots in 2010.  Real Gone’s new reissue is remastered from the original tapes and is an all-analog pressing.  It comes on black vinyl and also magenta vinyl.

  1. The Steve and Eydie collection is excellent. I acquired my copy as a PBS pledge benefit. I am glad to see it is now being widely released. Steve and Eydie are world-class singers and there is a tremendous amount of their musical output that has never been released on CD. It would be great if Real Gone Music would delve into their back catalog and tackle some of the material that has not been released since the initial LPs in the 60’s and 70’s.

I always wondered if Steve and Eydie owned their own masters. There was a period when they released some of their recordings on CD via their own music label GL Music. I’m not sure how much remastering was done on those recordings to bring them to CD. I know their recording of the Broadway musical Golden Rainbow was not particularly well done in the CD transfer. I think they used the mono version as opposed to stereo tapes. That recording especially seems ripe for a remastered reissue in full stereo on CD. It is really a shame that the catalog of these tremendous singers has relatively little output in the digital age. They are ripe for rediscovery.

    1. Hi Mike, thanks for the kind words. Yes, Steve and Eydie controlled many of their masters, and those original tapes were used for this collection. “Golden Rainbow” is at the top of my list, too; I hope the fine folks at Real Gone can make it happen. There is, indeed, so much to rediscover from Steve and Eydie’s discography…here’s hoping!

      1. I am hoping for a complete collection of their MGM recordings. Always overlooked. I will be purchasing this collection however.

    2. I got mine from the pledge drive too. And yea you can never have enough Steve and Eydie. I met them in Richmond after a show at the Altria Theatre (formerly the Mosque Theatre) Feb. 27th 1999, they were super nice. Eydie was super tiny without her heels and hair up. (may have been a wig onstage not sure)

    1. He’s there! A handful of titles disappeared from the post when it published overnight but they’ve since been reinstated. 🙂

  2. Santiago Paradoa

Is this 2026 4CD Ultimate Collection box set by Steve and Eydie have the same mastering as the earlier version offered via PBS as a pledge gift?
