Saddle up, pardners! Intrada’s latest archival film score releases are a premiere from a pop favorite and an expansion from a late legend of the soundtrack world.

First up, from that legend, it’s James Horner’s remastered and expanded score to An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. The sequel to Universal’s 1986 animated film, once again executive produced by Steven Spielberg, finds the sweet Fievel Mousekewitz and his family of Russian immigrant mice having an adventure in another part of 19th century America, moving west from New York City to the thriving Old West town Green River. Along the way, they meet some old friends, like Fievel’s feline friend Tiger (voiced by Dom DeLuise), and encounter some new faces, from the villainous Cat R. Waul (John Cleese) to the canine sheriff Wylie Burp (James Stewart, in his final film role). Since original Tail director Don Bluth declined to return, ceding duties to Phil Nibbelink and Simon Wells (the latter the great-grandson of sci-fi author H.G. Wells), a large part of the connective tissue between films comes courtesy of Horner, whose stirring Tail original “Somewhere Out There” (cowritten with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil) was a hit for Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram and a Grammy nominee for Song of the Year.

In classic fashion, Horner pulls from disparate sources – including themes from its predecessor – to create a powerful score that fits the epic mood of the sequel. (Full disclosure: this is the first film this author saw in a movie theater.) The new themes recall the best of Elmer Bernstein and Aaron Copland (notably “In Training,” a subtle spin on “Hoedown” fron the Copland ballet Rodeo), while “Dreams to Dream,” a key original song, took delicate root in a motif Horner wrote for the first film. (For the film’s end titles, Ronstadt returned to sing “Dreams,” though a version by Celine Dion – who’d work with Horner and lyricist Will Jennings on the Titanic smash “My Heart Will Go On” six years later – purportedly exists in the vaults.) The expanded score as presented here, it’s revealed, was dually recorded in London and Culver City, California, with some cues presented in the film as edited from both sessions. (The first disc closes with alternate cues, while the second features a remastered version of the original soundtrack album.) Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk have co-produced this set, with notes from Frank K. DeWald, a new cover designed by Stéphane Coëdel and package design by Kay Marshall.

Intrada next premieres a fun find for fans of Charles Fox, the composer behind the legendary pop classics “Killing Me Softly with His Song” and “I Got a Name” who wrote sensational themes for TV hits like Laverne and Shirley, The Love Boat, Wonder Woman and many more. In 1980, Fox scored the coming of age comedy Little Darlings, in which Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichol portrayed rivals at a summer camp in an American Pie-esque bet to lose their virginities – a wacky situation that gives way to some surprisingly smart cinematic observations. Restored from vaulted elements at Paramount Pictures by producers Chris Malone and Dan Goldwasser, this disc presents the first-ever release of the original score, complete with material that didn’t make the final cut of the film and even two Fox-sung demos of unused songs he wrote with lyricist Carole Bayer Sager! Jeff Bond provides liner notes in a package laid out by Marshall and featuring cover art by Coëdel.

Both titles will begin shipping in late October and can be pre-ordered now at the links below!
