Reissue Theory: Hall and Oates, Extended

January 25, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

hall oates 12 inch collectio 207256

Welcome to another installment of Reissue Theory, here we reflect on well-known albums of the past and the reissues they could someday see. Today's post might be out of touch, but we remind fans that Sony's not out of time to release a collection of remixes for one of their greatest acts of the 1980s. There are so many artists who have a lot of great 12" mixes that are either out of print on compact disc or entirely unavailable on the format. Oddly, some of the brightest stars of the MTV era

And the Nominees Are...

January 7, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

grammys 20111

The Grammys are happening! On February 13! As usual - well, at least since the 1990s - there will be a CD compiling the highest-profile nominees. It now has a track list and cover art. It's a pretty solid cross-section of the best-known artists, songs and nominations. Of course, there are some hilarious questions to ask about the track list. Why are nine of these songs from 2009? (That's probably due to eligibility requirements.) Did we really need to put the censored version of Cee-Lo's catchy

Release Round-Up: Week of December 14

December 14, 2010 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

holy diver

Another incredibly short one as we get closer to Christmas! Michael Jackson, Michael (Epic) A posthumous collection (the first of many) consisting of 21st century outtakes by The King of Pop. Did he sing them all? I don't know, but I know I'll buy this if only to make Will.i.am angry. (Official site) Dio, Holy Diver (Niji) The classic Dio album remastered and pressed onto picture vinyl by the late singer's own Niji label. (Facebook page) Bad Religion, 30th Anniversary Box Set

What Catalogue Titles Got Grammy Nominations?

December 2, 2010 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

beatles stereo

While you may or may not be fussing over this year's mainstream Grammy nominees (count this writer in the latter category), The Second Disc wanted to congratulate nominees for catalogue-related pursuits. One catalogue title has been nominated for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package, two got nods for Best Album Notes and Best Historical Recording is pretty self-explanatory. (Also, interestingly, the title track from posthumous Michael Jackson compilation This is It was nominated for

Welcome to another installment of Reissue Theory, where we reflect on well-known albums of the past and the reissues they could someday see. With another entry in the NOW That's What I Call Music series out in the U.S. today, we reflect on the series' original entries across the pond...and the titles in the series that have yet to appear on CD. Today in the States, a new entry in the NOW That's What I Call Music series was released (the 36th in the main series, not counting specialty

Breaking Snooze

November 8, 2010 By Mike Duquette 4 Comments

By now you've probably heard "Breaking News," the lead track off of Sony's upcoming posthumous Michael Jackson compilation Michael. If not, listen to it at MJ's official site. Once you've listened to it, you may feel free to join the chorus of "wait, what?"s that have surrounded this song. The big question on everyone's mind is, of course, whether Michael's vocals are on that track or not. (Sony, naturally, says it is.) I've seen plenty of polls asking for reader input, and you'll see ours

A Heatwave in November

October 28, 2010 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

heatwavehotpro1

This week has been unseasonably warm around The Second Disc HQ, and while that's not particularly fun, there is news of some heat of another kind - particularly, expanded reissues of the Heatwave catalogue coming your way from Cherry Red next month. The immortal disco band, which had a string of classic dance/soul cuts in the late '70s from the pen of member Rod Temperton (who also of course wrote some instant classics for Michael Jackson in the Off the Wall and Thriller days), will see no less

A Relatively Clear "Vision"

October 13, 2010 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

vision2

Well, what do you know? TMZ got it right. Epic and Legacy have announced Michael Jackson's Vision, a three-DVD set of Jackson's videography. Some 42 videos are included, several of them unreleased on any format. It's also the closest MJ fans in the U.S. have gotten to getting the entirety of Moonwalker released, as most of the vignettes from that film are included. Will you want to get rid of your old compilations (Video Greatest Hits HIStory, HIStory on Film Volume II, Dangerous: The Short

Back Tracks: The Jam

September 23, 2010 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

the jam snap1

The Jam were easily one of the best things to come from the U.K. punk-rock scene. This is an unusual consideration, given that nothing about the band really screamed punk-rock. The members of The Jam were polished in appearance and musical experience, and they were clearly influenced by American rock and R&B acts from Motown, Stax and Atlantic. They were as mod as one could get without joining the cast of Quadrophenia. But their sound had an edge that bands like The Clash and The Sex Pistols

News Round-Up: Stripped Smokey, Another QotSA Reissue and An Unsurprising Delay

September 1, 2010 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

qotsa

If you were looking for a bit of a change, musically, today might be the day to check out yesterday's digital release from Motown, Smokey Robinson's The Stripped Mixes. Not unlike a Michael Jackson set that was rush-released after his death last summer, Stripped puts an emphasis on The King of Motown's inimitable voice through ten acoustically-minded remixes. Call it a cash-in if you want, but the MJ set revealed some buried treasure in those new mixes. Plus, come on, it's Smokey Robinson. He

A Sign of Good "Faith"

August 6, 2010 By Mike Duquette 8 Comments

20100804 faith8005

This week's tease about the upcoming reissue of George Michael's Faith helps prove that the '80s, often thought to be an era of musical detritus, has its share of defining moments worth revisiting through catalogue titles. Of course, as time marches on, labels will continue to revisit the '80s for reissues and box sets, which will alternately confuse and delight listeners. Dozens of bands - Genesis, a-ha, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Tears for Fears, The Police, Bon Jovi and scores more - have

Unreleased Jacko Report Gets Wacko

August 2, 2010 By Mike Duquette 4 Comments

If you're one of the few dozen people who still reads Rolling Stone's Web site, the late-breaking "exclusive" that a new Michael Jackson compilation of outtakes is due in November sounds like a great bit of news. But oops! Looks like RS got beaten to the punch by a four-month-old press release. But they've got quotes, so it's legit, right? What's that? The quotes were taken from articles from 2009? Oh. Whoops. It's sad that Roger Friedman has to be the closest to a journalistic authority in

Our first interviewee is one of the most notable names from the world of reissues. The Finer-er Things

July 1, 2010 By Mike Duquette 7 Comments

the finer things

As many of our readers know, Island released a new-ish Steve Winwood box set, Revolutions: The Very Best of Steve Winwood. I say "new-ish" because the offerings weren't terribly different from the last expansive anthology of Winwood material, 1995's The Finer Things. Predictably, the set didn't do terribly well - a shame because Winwood is a solid, enjoyable performer to listen to, but simultaneously not a shame since it doesn't offer enough new stuff for catalogue enthusiasts to savor. But the

Reissue Theory: The Tubes, "Outside Inside"

June 30, 2010 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

tubes outsid 022

The music industry is a crazy place. One year your band's putting on a crazy stage show that equally satirizes and utilizes the grandest excesses of rock, the next minute you've got a hit single with most of the members of Toto for support. Such is the tale of The Tubes, one of many ambitious, underappreciated bands from the '70s and '80s. During the band's early tenure on A&M from 1975 to 1981, they had a significant following thanks to their funny songs (first single "White Punks on Dope"

A Catalogue to Last, Always and Forever

June 29, 2010 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

b003dw64zm2

Here's some under-the-radar, in-case-you-missed-it news concerning the discography of Heatwave, the multi-national soul/disco group famed for killer cuts like "Boogie Nights" and "Always and Forever." It looks like these records are getting their due on CD thanks to two indie labels, with one title already available and another few on the way. First up, Edsel U.K. has combined and released a double-disc set comprising their first two LPs, Too Hot to Handle (1976) and Central Heating (1978).

Close (To the Edit)

June 15, 2010 By Mike Duquette 22 Comments

Not to disparage our treasured readers, but reader Shaun delivered one of the most thought-provoking comments on The Second Disc in awhile when discussing yesterday's post on a hypothetical Dave Matthews Band compilation. To quote: But what's with all the edits in your tracklist, Mike? Sorry, but I HATE when you buy a "best of" set and you get stuck with radio, single edits. Those hideous cuts on both "My Life" and "Pressure" on the original pressing of Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Vol I & II

Prince Week Day 4: The Reissue Conundrum

June 7, 2010 By Mike Duquette 8 Comments

Talking about Prince on a blog devoted to back catalogue music usually results in three considerations: 1) Prince really should allow remasters/reissues of his astounding discography, 2) Prince won't ever allow remasters/reissues of said discography and 3) why the heck not? As many of his fellow contemporaries (Madonna, Michael Jackson, Rick James, etc.) and other luminaries (The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, even The Beatles) have enjoyed remastering and rediscovery on compact disc, Prince has

It Might Be (The Soundtrack for) You

June 5, 2010 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

outland1

The Film Score Monthly label has prepped another two titles for release: two very different scores from two different composers, but winners both. First up is Jerry Goldsmith's in-demand score for the Sean Connery space Western Outland (1981). Goldsmith created a score that resembled his suspenseful approach to Alien from two years before, and it was augmented by some last-minute additions by Michael Boddicker (Buckaroo Banzai, Flashdance and session work for Michael Jackson) and Morton Stevens

Paying the Price

May 27, 2010 By Mike Duquette 5 Comments

Next week is going to be much more comfortable when it comes to posting on The Second Disc. After several months of bitterly typing and researching over a creaky, aging Dell PC (having lost a nearly-just-as-creaky Thinkpad T60 laptop), the weekend should see your humble correspondent upgrading to a Macbook. As a lifelong Windows user (barring my time writing and editing for my newspaper in college), it's an unusual but worthwhile transition, and I can't wait to regain simple pleasures like

Friday Feature: "Dirty Dancing"

May 7, 2010 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

dd legacy1

Dirty Dancing is one of those movies that, on paper, should be a massive dud. It's a painfully by-the-numbers tale - rich girl becomes emotionally, culturally and sexually liberated by a dashing stranger and the art of (you guessed it) dirty dancing - but it is one of those movies that will not disappear from the public eye. And frankly, it's not hard to see why. Yes, as a story, Dirty Dancing is nothing special. But the production is something to behold. It immortalized its two young leads,

Boxed In

April 28, 2010 By Mike Duquette 6 Comments

led zeppelin2

Reaction to the recently-released tracklist for John Mellencamp's On the Rural Route 7609 box set has been a bit mixed, and for good reason. It's hard to greet a four-disc box set full of album tracks and just over a dozen unreleased outtakes with a price tag of nearly $100. But it's becoming clear that there's a bigger issue here at stake than Mellencamp fans getting soaked. Friends, the entire concept of a box set is in a state of crisis. It's been a long two decades since compact disc box

Release Round-Up: Wilde and Grey Edition

April 26, 2010 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

We've got a few reissue notes (in case you missed them) to start off your week. First up, Cherry Pop is prepping another batch of Kim Wilde reissues. The label re-released Wilde's RAK-era LPs - Kim Wilde (1981), Select (1982) and Catch as Catch Can (1983) to a strong reaction from her fanbase, and are now prepping two-disc editions of Teases & Dares (1984) and Another Step (1986), Wilde's first two records for the MCA label. The latter is notable for being co-produced by Rod Temperton and

Back Tracks: Paul McCartney

April 23, 2010 By Mike Duquette 6 Comments

mj mac3

Every now and then a catalogue-oriented story breaks into the mainstream. This week, we've had one of those moments: Paul McCartney is moving his back catalogue distribution to Concord Music Group from increasingly beleaguered EMI. Reissues will commence in August with a new pressing of Band on the Run, his high watermark with former band Wings. Of course, for someone of McCartney's caliber, this is not the first time his albums have been reissued. EMI did a massive remastering of 16
