Give Me the News: Edsel Preps New Box Set of Robert Palmer Classics

November 16, 2022 By Mike Duquette 15 Comments

Robert Palmer packshot

For as long as CD reissues have been a thing, Robert Palmer's catalogue has been crying out for some real respect. The late blue-eyed soul singer, only 54 when a heart attack ended his life in 2003, has been in real need of rediscovery - and efforts to rebuild his discography for the modern age are few and far between. Next year, U.K. label Edsel will throw their hat in the ring (again) with a deluxe box set of his most famous work. The Island Records Years is an in-depth look at the first

November 9, 2022 By Randy Fairman 7 Comments

Pat Martino Baiyina

We've already told you about Real Gone Music's pair of Christmas albums coming out this Friday, November 11: a vinyl version of Lea Michele's Christmas in the City and an expanded CD reissue of Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme's That Holiday Feeling! featuring liner notes by our very own Joe Marchese.  (Unfortunately, the expanded CD reissue of B.J. Thomas' Christmas Is Coming Home has been canceled for this year due to an unforeseen issue relating to the bonus material.  Hopefully it will be

Lucky Men: BMG Collects Emerson, Lake and Palmer Singles on New Box Set

July 25, 2022 By The Second Disc 5 Comments

Emerson Lake and Palmer Singles

Emerson, Lake and Palmer's first, self-titled album reached stores in 1970, heralding the arrival of one of the most significant bands of the progressive rock era.  Though ELP became known for its grand, classically-inspired album epics, the band also charted singles in the U.K., U.S., and throughout the world.  On August 26, BMG will recognize the 45 RPM legacy of Emerson, Lake and Palmer with the release of Singles, a collection of twelve seven-inch, two-sided singles culled from their U.K.

Ride Me, Easy Rider: Cherry Red, Esoteric Collect Vinegar Joe's "Island Recordings" Featuring Robert Palmer, Elkie Brooks

January 12, 2022 By Joe Marchese 3 Comments

Vinegar Joe Finer Things

Today, Vinegar Joe is best remembered for launching the careers of Robert Palmer and Elkie Brooks.  The band had risen from the ashes of a group called Dada intended by co-founder Pete Gage as "a combination of Mothers of Invention/Frank Zappa, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and The 5th Dimension.  Power vocalists plus brass and crazy arrangements." But that heady brew was too much for Atlantic Records' Ahmet Ertegun who urged Dada to strip away the fusion elements and concentrate on blues and rock.

The Three Fates: BMG Prepares Emerson, Lake and Palmer Reissues, New Anthology

Emerson Lake and Palmer Anthology

A new round of reissues dedicated to progressive titans Emerson, Lake and Palmer are on the way from the BMG label beginning this July and continuing through 2016 and 2017.  This new campaign promises to encompass not only ELP's nine studio albums but also the band's live recordings and compilations.  The reissues will arrive in a variety of formats including CD (with new liner notes by Chris Welch drawing on 2016 interviews with Greg Lake and the late Keith Emerson); standard, mastered for

Razor and Tie Revisits Emerson Lake and Palmer's "Brain Salad Surgery" For 40th Anniversary

July 31, 2014 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

brain salad surgery

For Emerson, Lake and Palmer, the fourth time was the charm. Keyboardist Keith Emerson, vocalist/bassist/guitarist Greg Lake and drummer/percussionist Carl Palmer were innovators in the progressive rock genre, fusing classical, jazz and heavy rock on a regular basis since their 1970 self-titled debut album. ELP was an answer both to the compact, three-minute pop songs that dominated the airwaves and to the blues-rock genre epitomized by the likes of Led Zeppelin, and the group pursued a

Edsel Reissues Robert Palmer's Island Discography for Every Kinda People

August 1, 2013 By Mike Duquette 7 Comments

robert palmer

One of the most truly odd omissions in catalogue history, the lack of expanded reissues for Robert Palmer's iconic Island Records catalogue will finally be rectified by Edsel in August. Palmer's nine albums for the Island label will be collected onto four two-disc sets, all remastered and featuring a large swath of bonus material. (The albums are grouped in twos, with the exception of a set collating Secrets (1979), Clues (1980) and Maybe It's Live (1982).) Taken together, they represent one

Simply Irresistible: Edsel Plans Expanded Robert Palmer Two-Fers

January 2, 2013 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

palmer edsel 2

The point is irrefutable! Edsel is releasing two double-disc sets containing all of the late, great Robert Palmer's albums for EMI, with a few audio extras. One of the best blue-eyed soul singers from across the pond, Palmer had been well-known among pop gurus for his eclectic discography on Island Records in the 1970s and 1980s, including hits like "Every Kinda People" and "Bad Case of Loving You." His big break in the U.S., however, came when Andy and John Taylor, the guitarist and bassist

Ooh, what a lucky man I am!  Chances are you will be, too, if you’ve been anticipating the just-launched series of deluxe reissues from Emerson, Lake & Palmer, available now from Razor and Tie in the U.S. and Sony Music internationally.  It’s back to the very beginning for the progressive rock supergroup, with 1970’s eponymous debut and 1971’s Tarkus both having been revisited in 2-CD/1-DVD editions as you’ve never heard them before. Keith Emerson (organ/synthesizer/piano), Greg Lake

phantom of the paradise

Despite the spurious reports of the “death of the CD,” the reissue biz is still thriving on the little silver platter, offering up all manner of deluxe editions for the discerning customer.  (That means you, dear reader!)  In 2011, we’ve seen the launch of such heavyweights-to-be as Real Gone Music, Omnivore Recordings and RockBeat Records, and we’re now happy to welcome another name to the fold.  Culture Factory USA quietly launched this past September, with releases from Mink DeVille, Moon

Reissue Theory: Robert Palmer - "Riptide"

March 4, 2010 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

It's no secret that I'm a huge Duran Duran fan (these upcoming reissues are seriously a thing of beauty). But I also credit them with opening me up to a whole lot of other acts. Had I not started listening to them in middle school, I would not have been drawn to other synth/New Wave bands, CHIC, Madonna, David Bowie or Robert Palmer. Palmer in particular was quite the performer. His Duran connections were smallish - he was the lead vocalist for DD side-project The Power Station - but he was a

Leavin' Here: Motörhead's Earliest Classic Trio Recordings Unearthed

May 12, 2025 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Version 1.0.0

Motörhead's 50th anniversary will be celebrated with a fascinating find: the premiere release of the first studio sessions to feature the trio's classic line-up. The Manticore Tapes, released on June 27, will offer the first studio sessions from the late summer of 1976 with the beloved line-up of singer/bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister, guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke and drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor. Though cut in a perhaps unusual location well associated with one of progressive rock's

Beyond Today - and Tomorrow: A Look At Liberation Hall's Recent and Upcoming Releases

May 8, 2025 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Pearl Harbor Explosions

The Liberation Hall label has, of late, been a haven for interesting and unusual reissues from exciting corners of the post-punk scene. (They've also been active during Record Store Day, recently releasing a box set of albums by The Blasters and an anthology of work by Clarence White of The Byrds.) Here's a look at three noteworthy releases that have been or will be in stores soon. The label in April released an expansion of the debut album by Pearl Harbor & The Explosions, a

Mondo Maestro: New John Williams Box Set Series Announced, Plus 'Star Wars' Re-Recordings on Vinyl

May 5, 2025 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

John Williams Anthology 1

With yesterday being "May the Fourth" and an informal day of celebration for Star Wars fans (even though "orthodox" fans might recognize the original film's release date, May 25, as a holiday of its own!), the time is right to plan a few music reissues related to the film - and one exciting, ambitious new announcement for the catalogue of the series' longtime composer, John Williams. The 93-year-old composer has kept a low profile since the release of his score for the fifth and final Indiana

Oooh, This I Need: Adam Mattera Talks 'Dearly Beloved: A Prince Songbook'

April 21, 2025 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

Dearly Beloved Prince Songbook

Last year, The Second Disc had nothing but good things to say about Dearly Beloved: A Prince Songbook, Cherry Red's triple-disc tribute to the music of Prince. The set told a story of The Artist's massive impact on pop, rock and soul by way of songs he gave others to record and a galaxy of genre-bending covers. In a year of considerable challenges in Prince fandom, it was a veritable oasis in a desert. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of speaking with Adam Mattera, the curator and

Holiday Gift Guide Review: 'Dearly Beloved: A Prince Celebration'

December 20, 2024 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

Dearly Beloved Prince Songbook

The holidays are a time of good cheer and gratitude, where we all (in theory) come together to share in a common joy. There has not been a lot of common joy if you're a Prince fan; we don't need to re-litigate it more than we did this summer, but it's worth noting that the quest to make intriguing, posthumous Prince projects under the current estate organization has maybe gotten worse than when we published our editorial. But there have been celebrations of The Purple One that honor his

King of America and Other Realms

It was a fine idea at the time/Now it's a brilliant mistake... Elvis Costello delivered a powerful surprise in 1986 when he shed his backing band, The Attractions, and teamed up with T Bone Burnett for King of America.  Originally credited in the U.K. to The Costello Show (Featuring The Attractions and Confederates) and in the U.S. to The Costello Show (Featuring Elvis Costello), the album backtracked from the sleek '80s polish of its two immediate predecessors (Punch the Clock and Goodbye

Joy in Repetition: Cherry Red's 'Dearly Beloved' Pays Tribute to Prince, the Songwriter

September 10, 2024 By Mike Duquette 4 Comments

Dearly Beloved Prince Songbook

Between the muted 40th anniversary celebration of Purple Rain and the bizarre drama over an estate-sanctioned Netflix documentary on his life and career, Prince fans could probably use a win lately. A new compilation from Cherry Red looks like it might finally offer one. Dearly Beloved - A Prince Songbook is an unexpectedly robust-looking 3CD set that will pay tribute to the Minneapolis icon as a songwriter - one whose classic hits have become pop standards, with so much talent overflowing
