Soundtrack News Round-Up: Spock, Mancini and Spartacus

May 25, 2010 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

star trek iii fsm2

Well, here's a nice surprise. Following their masterfully-done expansion of James Horner's score to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan last year, Film Score Monthly presents a double-disc reissue of Horner's Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. The unlimited set includes the complete score on one disc and the original LP presentation on the other. Intrada's announced some new titles as well. Les Baxter's score to The Beast Within and Henry Mancini's jazzy soundtrack to 99 and 44/100% Dead!, both

News Roundup: Going for the Gold

May 24, 2010 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Yet another sub-genre of the catalogue world is the audiophile reissue. Companies like Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, Audio Fidelity and Analogue Productions specialize in reissuing classic titles for an audiophile audience, often utilizing the original master tapes for a release on gold CD, hybrid SACD or high-quality LP. With excellent sound quality as the main mandate, bonus tracks and new liner notes are rare on these releases which generally intend to replicate the original artwork and

dion wonder where im bound2

It seems that the Cherry Red family of labels' slogan should be "expect the unexpected." Each label is run by a different team, resulting in an extremely diverse array of offerings. Steve Stanley's Now Sounds celebrates, but isn't strictly limited to, the musical era of 1964-1972. Past reissues have encompassed such styles as harmony and sunshine pop (Roger Nichols and the Small Circle of Friends, The Association), folk (Janis Ian), light psychedelia (Colours), "Bacharock" (The Golden Gate) and

Friday Feature: The Star Wars Trilogy

May 21, 2010 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

rotj se1

It was three decades ago today that The Empire Strikes Back was released. Much has been written about what the movie did for the Star Wars trilogy as a cultural force (no pun intended), for sequels in general and so on. But let's not kid ourselves here: when Empire first came out, it was not seen as the masterpiece it is now. The New York Times gave this film - easily the most watchable of the three Star Wars movies - a largely negative write-up. But whatever the merit of such reviews nowadays,

pressure cookin2

Two newly-announced catalogue titles bring some rare tracks by R&B and soul legends to CD for the first time - and both have a bit of a Motown collection. First up is Reel Music's CD debut of Pressure Cookin', the only LP cut by Labelle for RCA Records. Recorded a year before "Lady Marmalade" shot the group to success, this record features some intriguing highlights, including a medley of Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air" and Gil Scott-Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be

The Second Disc is pleased to pass along the long-awaited track list for Hip-o Select's upcoming Live @ The Forum by The Jackson 5. This two-disc set, to be released June 22 - almost a year to the day since Michael Jackson passed away - collects two previously unreleased shows recorded at the legendary Los Angeles venue: one taken from a week before the J5 scored their third consecutive No. 1 with their third single ("The Love You Save"), and another just days before Michael turned 14. Reissue Theory: "Stoney and Meatloaf"

May 11, 2010 By Joe Marchese 9 Comments

This week sees the release of Hang Cool, Teddy Bear, the 11th studio offering from Meat Loaf. The outsized rock personality skyrocketed to fame with 1977's Bat Out of Hell, the theatrical rock opus penned by Jim Steinman and produced by Todd Rundgren. As Meat prepares to unleash his latest work (cheekily placing a roman numeral "IV" on the album's back cover, making it clear that he intends Hang Cool as another Steinman-less sequel to Bat), could there be a better time for a Reissue Theory-style

And Don't It Feel Good (To Have an Update)

May 10, 2010 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

katrina1

Way back in the early days of The Second Disc, we reported on a set of remasters from Katrina and The Waves due for an April release. Only somewhat recently did we realize the release date had passed - but unlike most reissues that get announced and forgotten about, these actually came out. Well, sort of, anyway. As of this writing, all four reissued LPs (Kimberley Rew's The Bible of Bop, featuring tracks from The Waves, The Soft Boys and The dB's; The Waves' debut EP, Shock Horror! and both

Back Tracks: Barry Manilow, Part 2 (1985-2010)

May 9, 2010 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Back Tracks left Barry Manilow in 1984 after the release of his first genre-specific album, the jazz-inflected 2:00 a.m. Paradise Café. We pick up with him shifting gears in an attempt to once again court the pop market. He’s left his longtime label, Arista, and signed a new deal with RCA. This union would be a short-lived one, producing just four albums: two sets of his greatest hits as sung in Spanish and Portuguese, and the following two discs... Manilow (RCA, 1985 - reissued Legacy,

Back Tracks: Barry Manilow, Part 1 (1973-1984)

May 7, 2010 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Where Barry Manilow is concerned, it's best to let the facts speak for themselves. A Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award winner, Manilow scored his first Billboard No. 1 album in 1977, his most recent in 2006. His string of hit singles extended from 1974's chart-topping "Mandy" to 1983's Top 20 "Read 'Em and Weep," with 38 songs hitting the Top 40. He's recorded over 25 studio albums and released countless more live discs, compilations and soundtracks, and regularly plays to sell-out houses after over

Release Round-Up: Wilde and Grey Edition

April 26, 2010 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

We've got a few reissue notes (in case you missed them) to start off your week. First up, Cherry Pop is prepping another batch of Kim Wilde reissues. The label re-released Wilde's RAK-era LPs - Kim Wilde (1981), Select (1982) and Catch as Catch Can (1983) to a strong reaction from her fanbase, and are now prepping two-disc editions of Teases & Dares (1984) and Another Step (1986), Wilde's first two records for the MCA label. The latter is notable for being co-produced by Rod Temperton and

Reissue Theory: Neil Diamond with a Bang!

April 19, 2010 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Long before he read about a frog who dreamed of being a king – and then became one – Neil Diamond was an up-and-coming songwriter in the waning days of the Brill Building.  After a few unsuccessful stabs at recording in the early part of the decade, Diamond was taken under the wing of Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Bert Berns.  In January 1966, the hits started coming: first “Sunday and Me” for Jay and the Americans, then “I’m A Believer” and “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” both for the

Review: Two by Mancini

April 16, 2010 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

hawaiians vol1242

Henry Mancini would have gone down in film history had he only composed the instantly recognizable “Pink Panther Theme,” or supplied the melody to Johnny Mercer’s wistful lyric “Moon River.”  But those accomplishments are mere tips of the iceberg for the man who scored over 80 films and recorded over 90 albums, garnering 20 Grammys and 4 Oscars along the way.  Hardly a year goes by without a CD reissue of one of his classic scores, and 2010 is no exception, with 2 very different works given new

You've Still Got A Friend: "The Essential Carole King"

April 3, 2010 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

essential ck2

The Second Disc is pleased to introduce our first contributor, Joe Marchese.  Joe is a NY/NJ-based writer, theatre director and music enthusiast, and is thrilled to be on board. For many of her fans, Carole King's career begins and ends with Tapestry. It's not hard to see why; the seminal 1971 album spent fifteen weeks perched at No. 1 on Billboard’s album chart, remained on the chart for six years, spawned two chart-topping pop singles, and influenced an entire generation of introspective

The Not-So-Finer Things

March 31, 2010 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

The announcement of Revelutions: The Very Best of Steve Winwood - a new compilation from Island available as either a single-disc compilation or a four-disc box set - should be exciting. Winwood is a hell of a musician whose illustrious career has seen him work with Blind Faith, Traffic and The Spencer Davis Group, not to mention his own successful solo work. But this set is boring, not just for its lack of vault content but because it's essentially been released before. The Finer Things was a

Reissue Theory: Tracy Chapman, "Tracy Chapman"

March 30, 2010 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

tracy chapman2

We music fans live for that moment when a song comes from nowhere - through a radio, perhaps, or more likely through your computer speakers nowadays - grabs us and doesn't let go. That was undoubtedly the case with "Fast Car," the first single by singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman. The song - for the ten or so of you who might have missed it over the better part of 20 years - is an achingly bittersweet, first-person ballad about a woman planning to escape her impoverished, broken family only to

Reissue Theory x4: Chaka Khan (and Rufus Too)

March 24, 2010 By Mike Duquette 5 Comments

i feel for you single5

The Second Disc is a day late (but no less enthusiastic) in wishing Chaka Khan, The Queen of Funk Soul, a happy birthday. Chaka has had, to say the least, an illustrious career, first as a member of Rufus then as a wildly successful solo artist in the late '70s and '80s. What is the secret to Khan's ongoing popularity? Chalk it up to three things. First, there's that powerhouse voice - at once sensuous and celebratory. There's also the great sounds she surrounds her vocals with, whether it's

Just a day after readying a deluxe edition of Meet the Supremes for the world, Hip-O Select comes through with a pair of out-of-print Rick James titles. Fire It Up (1979) and Garden of Love (1980) are both making their way to CD (the latter being pressed on CD for the first time) with a few bonus tracks. The original artwork will be replicated for each and complemented with liner notes by Yale music professor Michael Veal. Links are here and here and full song specs are below. Rick James -

Reissue Theory: Various Artists - "Soup for One: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack"

March 22, 2010 By Mike Duquette 4 Comments

soup for one3

There may not be enough positive words to write about Nile Rodgers. The sole surviving member of The CHIC Organization (which included bassist Bernard Edwards and drummer Tony Thompson), Rodgers helped shape the sound of late '70s and early '80s pop and R&B, either as a performer with CHIC, a producer - often alongside Edwards - for Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, Madonna and others or even as a sampled artist (see The Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" and "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash

Every Day Should Be Record Store Day

March 19, 2010 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

And perhaps it is, depending on how often you buy from one. The fourth annual Record Store Day is happening in less than a month (April 17) but already a lot of releases have been announced for the occasion. Best of all, there are some neat releases for catalogue fans out there, too. You can have a look at the full list here, but here are some of the neatest catalogue offerings coming on Record Store Day. Devo, Duty Now for the Future (1979) (Warner Bros.) As previously mentioned, Devo's
