March 14, 2023 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Junie Morrison Evacuate Your Seats

Evacuate Your Seats!  Walter "Junie" Morrison's 1984 album found the veteran of Ohio Players and Parliament-Funkadelic digging deep into techno-funk sounds with his own singular sensibility.  The original credits proclaimed that Morrison produced, performed, wrote, and directed the album - and indeed, Morrison was a one-band man save for the engineers joining him in the studio.  Now, his funky tour de force is coming to CD from Iconoclassic Records.  On March 24, the label will release a newly

Review: Elvis Presley, "Elvis on Tour"

March 6, 2023 By Joe Marchese 5 Comments

Elvis On Tour Box

When Elvis on Tour hit the big screen in 1972, Elvis Presley was no longer the frequent cinema fixture of the 1960s, when he would crank out two or even three motion pictures a year.  His last movie appearance was the 1970 documentary Elvis: That's the Way It Is, chronicling the Elvis Summer Festival of 1970 at Las Vegas' International Hotel.  Elvis on Tour painted with an even larger canvas.  Though it had originally been mooted as a new showcase of Presley's Vegas performances, the concept

March 3, 2023 By Joe Marchese 9 Comments

Songs of Bacharach and Costello Cover

And so this had to be/painted from memory... The news broke on the morning of February 9, 2023 that Burt Bacharach had died at the age of 94.  That evening, his longtime friend and musical partner Elvis Costello opened a 10-evening residency at New York's Gramercy Theatre which ultimately saw him perform 239 unique songs from every far-flung corner of his wide-ranging catalogue.  The residency became a grand tribute to Bacharach.  The pre-show music piping throughout the theatre each night

Marc Almond Open All Night

Cherry Red is continuing its longtime association with singer-songwriter Marc Almond on a new, deluxe 3-CD edition of his 1999 album Open All Night.  While not his most commercially successful record, it remains one of his most beloved for its compelling blend of the many styles that informed his music.  This new release, on Cherry Red's SFE imprint, expands the original LP with demos, alternate versions, live tracks, and more.  SFE previously reissued Open All Night as a 2-CD set in 2010; this

February 23, 2023 By The Second Disc 3 Comments

Macy Gray Stripped

In April 2016, Macy Gray entered an old church in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to record one of the most distinctive albums of her career.  Stripped, originally released on the Chesky Records label, matched the R&B diva with a jazz quartet.  On original songs, favorites from her discography, and unexpected covers alike, Gray's smoky rasp took full flight.  On March 17, 7a Records - the label best-known for its deep dives into the world of The Monkees - reissues Stripped for the very first time on

Just My Salvation: Vinyl Me, Please Collects Best of Stax's Gospel Truth in New Box Set

February 21, 2023 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Best of Gospel Truth

When Memphis' Stax Records launched its Gospel Truth imprint in 1972, its mission was simple: to "carry the message of today's gospel to the people on the street."  The label's Al Bell worked closely with in-house radio guru/producer/songwriter Dave Clark and staffer Mary Peak Paterson to afford Gospel Truth the same level of promotion as Stax's secular releases, and accessibility was the byword.  Bell paired traditional gospel talents with young artists well-versed in rock, funk, blues, and

Late producer Sir George Martin is described as A Painter in Sound on Cherry Red/El's new collection of his Pre-Beatles Productions and Classical Influences.  While Martin has been anthologized in the past, most notably on the unparalleled 6-CD set Produced by George Martin in 2001, there's always room for another one - in this case, an eclectic 4-CD journey that's largely far-removed from the rock which made Martin famous.
