Party Is a Groovy Thing: People's Choice Philly Soul and Funk Collected by BBR

September 14, 2017 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Peoples Choice Any Way You Wanna

Philadelphia International Records, home of The Sound of Philadelphia, wasn't always the most hospitable label for bands.  After all, the label's "house band" MFSB featured some of the finest musicians anywhere, so self-contained units such as Instant Funk, Force of Nature, or even the venerable Soul Survivors inevitably played second fiddle to the vocal groups supported so deftly by MFSB.  But of all the Philly International bands, one rose above the rest.  People's Choice scored an R&B

Review: Liza Minnelli, "Results: Expanded 4-Disc Edition"

September 8, 2017 By Joe Marchese 8 Comments

Liza Minnelli Results Expanded

The list of Liza Minnelli's musical partners reads like a "Who's Who" of popular culture: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Charles Aznavour, Donna Summer, Joel Grey, Chita Rivera, and of course, her mother Judy Garland, to name a few.  Yet one of Minnelli's most cherished collaborations was also one of her most unexpected. 1989's Results was the superstar's first studio album in over a decade, and teamed her with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, a.k.a. the British dance-pop duo Pet Shop Boys.

TOMORROW Is Melissa Manchester Day! "Complete Arista Singles" Arrives Alongside Melissa's New Album

September 7, 2017 By Joe Marchese 5 Comments

Melissa Manchester Through the Eyes of Love

"Please, don't let this feeling end..." The sentiment of that famous lyric is one shared by listeners every time Melissa Manchester begins to sing. From her earliest pop hits through her recent triumphs on the jazz charts, Manchester's voice has always resonated with warmth and power. In 1975, she was one of a handful of select talents chosen by Clive Davis to inaugurate his Arista Records label, and during her near-decade on the label, the fiercely independent artist established herself as

Queen's 'News of the World' Championed In New Box Set

September 5, 2017 By Mike Duquette 5 Comments

News of the World 40 front

Queen's sixth album, 1977's News of the World, is being generously expanded for its 40th anniversary in a new 3CD/1DVD/1LP box set, to be released in November. Following the typically grandiose rock of A Day At the Races a year before, Queen and longtime engineer Mike Stone, now promoted to co-producer, found themselves pursuing various rock styles and dialing back some of their more ornate impulses. This is arguably nowhere more prominent than in the landmark one-two opening salvo of arena

Oh, Honey: Big Break Celebrates 40 Years of Delegation with Two New Releases

August 31, 2017 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Delegation In Loves Time

Over the course of just four albums released between 1977 and 1982, Delegation established a reputation and a following that continues to this very day based on the group's sleek brand of soulful, dance-infused R&B.  The trio, still active today as led by founding member Ricky Bailey, has long been a mainstay of Cherry Red's Big Break Records label.  That association which has recently culminated in a pair of potent releases: the definitive, double-disc anthology In Love's Time: The

Soundtrack Round-Up: Action, Suspense, Horror Classics from Silvestri, Donaggio and More

August 30, 2017 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Romancing the Stone

Intrada, La-La Land and Lakeshore Records have some delightful soundtrack titles available or forthcoming right now, including rediscovered musical works for some major blockbusters of the '80s and '90s. Last week, Intrada reissued Pino Donaggio's score to Body Double, Brian De Palma's erotically-charged thriller about a claustrophobic actor mixed up in a nightmarish murder mystery. Craig Wassen and Melanie Griffith star, De Palma co-writes, produces and directs; and Donaggio marks his fourth

Southern Blood [Various Formats]

Gregg Allman Southern Blood

The late, great Gregg Allman's final recordings are presented on Southern Blood, his first studio album since 2011's Low Country Blues. This final testament from an artist who shaped the sound of southern rock was produced by Don Was and recorded in the legendary Muscle Shoals, where his brother Duane Allman famously enhanced the recordings of so many artists passing through. Channeling the spirit that informed his solo works like Laid Back, Allman brought his distinctive style to songs written

Out of the Blue: Debbie Gibson Singles Collection, Box Set Coming Soon

August 28, 2017 By Mike Duquette 5 Comments

Debbie Gibson WCBT

Three decades ago, a 17-year-old girl from Brooklyn quite literally came from out of the blue with an infectious blend of pop that was all her own. Now, two different labels are celebrating Debbie Gibson's classic catalogue with a double-disc collection and a no-holds-barred box set. Gibson, the third of four girls born to a family of music lovers, was writing and recording her own material before she reached her teens. In 1986, her demo "Only In My Dreams" earned her a development deal at

Echo and the Bunnymen Its All Live Now

Run Out Groove, the new vinyl arm of Rhino and Warner Music Group, has continued its winning streak with another top-notch presentation - this time from the Liverpool-bred post-punk band Echo and the Bunnymen.  The limited edition It's All Live Now is a newly-curated title with ten tracks - mostly cover versions, from Bob Dylan to The Velvet Underground - performed in concert between 1983 and 1985, as originally released on singles and/or the band's 2001 retrospective CD box set Crystal Days

New Hanson Collection to Lodge "MMMBop" In People's Heads Again

August 24, 2017 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

Hanson Middle of Everywhere

Twenty summers ago, it wafted through the early summer air like pollen: a wordless chorus with an absurdly chipper melody, sung by three brothers with shoulder-length blonde hair. Hanson's "MMMBop," an international chart-topper, didn't lead to wave after wave of commercial success for the Tulsa, Oklahoma trio, the group--now together for a quarter century--continues to turn out solid pop-rock tunes for their devoted fans. And this fall, a double-disc greatest hits compilation brings to the

Boom Boom Boom Boom: Craft Preps John Lee Hooker Centennial Box

August 23, 2017 By Mike Duquette 6 Comments

King of the Boogie

With a style that synthesized Mississippi Delta blues through the urban Midwest during the mid-20th century and beyond, John Lee Hooker was the blues. And now, to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday, Craft Recordings is prepping a five-disc box set, to be released next month. King Of The Boogie collects a track for every year since Hooker's presumed birth in 1917. The son of a sharecropper raised almost entirely on church spirituals, Hooker ran away from home at a young age,

Review: Howard Jones, "Best 1983-2017"

August 21, 2017 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

Howard Jones Best

Howard Jones is more than his synths. The British keyboardist dominated his home country's charts in the '80s (and flirted with success on American shores more than a few times in the same period) with fascinatingly busy, seriously catchy slices of synthpop with more than a little R&B influence. But peel back the hooks and riffs and you'll find the work of a man who is searching--for what, it's not always clear, but the search is there. Best 1983-2017 (Cherry Red Records PCDTRED 707), an

Whitesnake 1987 30

Nearly 40 years after they first formed, David Coverdale has made up his mind about Whitesnake--and ain't wastin' no more time: he's moving the band's back catalogue to Warner Music Group, Billboard reports. Though a new studio album and other new goodies are planned, of particular interest to catalogue enthusiasts is the October 6 reissue of the band's 1987 self-titled album on Rhino Records. Available in a variety of formats, including 2CD, 4CD/1DVD and 2LP sets, Whitesnake will feature

Review: The Creation, "Creation Theory"

August 16, 2017 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Creation Creation Theory

Though The Creation only left behind roughly a couple dozen songs during their mid-'60s heyday, the story of the hard-rocking mods actually goes back further, and extends to decades later.  Earlier this year, the U.S. label Numero Group presented 46 masters, alternates and remixes on a double-disc collection entitled Action Painting.  Shortly thereafter, U.K. label Edsel unveiled an even more thorough presentation of the complete Creation story containing those 46 tracks and 33

Before there was Creedence Clearwater Revival, there was The Golliwogs. The San Francisco Bay Area band formed in 1959 as an instrumental trio (John Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook) by the name of The Blue Velvets. A year later, John's older brother Tom joined, completing the line-up that would eventually keep on chooglin' as Creedence Clearwater Revival. By 1964's end, the quartet had signed with Fantasy Records and reinvented themselves as The Golliwogs, so named by Fantasy's co-owner

Esther Phillips Kudu Anthology

Cherry Red's SoulMusic Records label has added another quintet of releases to its rapidly-growing Anthology series, and this batch is among the most eclectic yet, blurring the lines of jazz, pop, and R&B with Esther Phillips, Levert, Tom Browne, Kashif, and Mtume. As the premier vocalist on CTI Records' Kudu imprint, Esther Phillips (1935-1984) played a key role in producer Creed Taylor's "Cool Revolution" at CTI. A gifted vocalist, Phillips nonetheless struggled with personal demons
