We’re An American Band: the new 3-CD collection from Cherry Red’s Grapefruit Records is titled after Grand Funk (Railroad)’s 1973 chart-topping anthem.  The song penned by Don Brewer and produced by Todd Rundgren was a semi-autobiographical look at life on the road, complete with parties, groupies, and guest stars.  The story goes that the title phrase developed from a friendly argument between Grand Funk and Humble Pie about British vs. American rock.  Brewer insisted that wasn’t the way it happened, but the resulting song indeed made the case for the U.S. hard…

Spirit of Salvation: Cherry Red, Esoteric Collect Spirit’s Mercury Years on New 8-CD Box Set

Back in 2018, Cherry Red’s Esoteric Recordings arm anthologized the early, seminal albums from Los Angeles rock band Spirit.  The group spun off from The Red Roosters, a group which included Randy California (real name: Randy Wolfe) on guitars and vocals, Mark Andes on bass, and Jay Ferguson on vocals and percussion.  When California’s stepfather Ed Cassidy and John Locke joined on drums and keyboards, respectively, the members rechristened themselves Spirits Rebellious, and finally, Spirit.  The five-person line-up came to the attention of producer and impresario Lou Adler, who signed the band…

Giant Potatoes: Esoteric, Cherry Red Expand Spirit’s “Potatoland” to Four CDs, Revisit “Two Sides of a Rainbow”

Last year, Cherry Red’s Esoteric Recordings imprint collected expanded editions of the Ode and Epic albums from the band Spirit as the box set It Shall Be: The Ode and Epic Recordings 1968-1972. Now, Esoteric has revisited Spirit but jumped into the future for a pair of releases: The Complete Potatoland and Two Sides of a Rainbow: Live at the Rainbow 1978.
