The Times, They Are Indeed A-Changin’: Mono Dylan Reissues Coming

It’s been bandied about for a little bit now, but it looks like it’s true: there’s an Amazon listing for Bob Dylan’s The Original Mono Recordings. It’s an eight-disc set of the first eight Dylan LPs – his 1962 self-titled debut to 1967’s John Wesley Harding in their original mono mixes (or more specifically, according to this Rolling Stone article: “reportedly mastered using ‘first issue copies of the mono LPs’ in order to recreate the sound of the original LPs”) – with a new 60-page book of liner notes by Greil Marcus and discographical information.

It’s not the only catalogue project planned from Dylan’s camp: The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 is also set to drop in October, alongside the mono box. A purported track list from the RS article – as well as reminders of the track lists for each record in the box – can be found after the jump. (Thanks to Pause & Play for the dates.)

  1. So, if Rolling Stone magazine is correct(I doubt it), Sony is going to master the Bob Dylan mono CD’s from vinyl. If so, count me out. I’ve already got perfectly computer de-clicked bootleg CD-R editions of all of those mono albums, plus “Greatest Hits”.

    1. Yeah, that sounds crazy that they’d master them from vinyl, but I wanted to include that citation just so everyone would know that such an idea’s out there.

Frankly, I’m much more interested in getting the mono mixes of the Hendrix material out there instead.

  2. As for “The Bootleg Series Vol.9”, the 7 Leeds Music demos which open the set will be new to my collection. I guess that will be reason for a completists like me to buy the set. However, the unofficial 2-CD “Witmark Demos” set(on the “Capricorn” label) has four songs not found in “The Bootleg Series Vol.9”, and they are “Blowin’ in The Wind”, Long Ago,Far Away”.”Eternal Circle” & “Percy’s Song”.

    1. D’oh! I’m eagerly awaiting Vol. 9, but why do record labels always give potential purchasers a reason to hold onto (or seek out) bootlegs? Thanks for the heads-up, Phil.

  3. Are the mono vinyls going to be any different than the mono ones already reissued?? and if so, how much better. Time out of Mind and Love and Theft are the vinyls that need to be reissued, they are very very pricey!!
