The Second Disc's Crystal Ball

December 1, 2010 By Mike Duquette 23 Comments

Today being the first day of December, we're really entering the home stretch of another year. With that in mind, we present a neat little discussion topic for your perusal.

With a new year creeping around the corner, there's going to be an inevitable crop of reissues coming our way next year. Billy Joel and Paul Simon are having their catalogues redone, and reissues from George Michael and Thin Lizzy are going to brighten up the bleaker months of winter. We can even expect offerings from Ozzy Osbourne (bumped from last year), Howard Jones (in theory) and REO Speedwagon (maybe).

But what else are we missing? What sort of anniversaries would you like to see commemorated, milestones to be celebrated, potential reunions to capitalize upon? We're turning The Second Disc's Crystal Ball over to you; what reissues, remasters and box sets do you want 2011 to bring you? Sound off in the comments!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Nice on-topic illustration: What I would like is a remastered series of the Prince WB catalogue including bonus tracks like 12", B-side, alternate takes.

Like many other readers on this site, I would like to see reissues of the Prince catalogue.

I would like to see two-disc reissues of Bananarama's catalogue, most specifically their debut album up to "Wow" (I know Rhino reissued their catalogue in 2007, but the single disc reissues skipped the Nana's popular club mixes in favour of single versions and B-sides).

I'm looking forward to George Michael's Faith reissue, but I hope Listen Without Prejudice is also reissued. And speaking of GM, Wham's catalogue should be reissued.

I think Cherry Pop or Edsel should continue the excellent job of reissuing the PWL catalogue (see the Rick Astley and Jason Donovan reissues) by focusing on Kylie Minogue's PWL era albums.

And I would love to see Chaka Khan get the reissue treatment as well as a box set of her Warner Bros years.

I would love to see catalog remasters for Styx, Sammy Hagar, Billy Squier (DSN was already done), The Cars, Bryan Adams and Def Leppard's first two albums. And I'm hoping the Prince remasters are for real also.

Of course they'd all have to have bonus and unreleased material as well.

If only I was in charge!

Personally, I'm looking forward to Janet Jackson's box set, which she said she was working on with Universal Music, in a recent review. She's had so many b-sides, remixes and alternate versions, and leftover album tracks over the years that I'm hoping this will be great. The packaging had better be beautiful! Additionally, I'd love it if she'd release the remiander of her tours on DVD-her fans have waited long enough. Also, I'm looking forward to the new, upcoming albums by Expose', Stevie Nicks, and Celine Dion. Plus, Def Leppard, Vanessa Williams, Shania Twain, and a possible Aerosmith.

I've been wondering to myself that it might be possible that 2011 will see a Led Zeppelin-IV: 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition box set. Perhaps the long hoped for Japan '71 live material might be the bonus material along with the unreleased studio material we were supposed to get when there had been a rumored (if I'm recalling correctly) 2-disc Deluxe Edition that never saw the light of day.

I would like to have (unlikely) reissues of:

    Suede three-first albuns in expanded editions, such as the reissues of MSP, Stone Roses, etc. (2CDs+1DVD) in Legacy Edition serie's;

    Wings live album "... Over America", in a box edition (three-disc, plus a dvd);

Integral discography of Blur, in the same style os Radiohead "Collectors Editions" released in the past year.

    Greetings of Brazil

I'd love to see Woodshtick and More by the Credibility Gap, and I would not be surprised to see the remainder of the Apple catalogue and the DE of Sarah Cracknell's Lipslide, if it's still happening.

I agree with Tom on wanting to see Prince, George Michael, and Wham.
I'll add on my own wish for the last two Barry Manilow albums that have yet to see the light of day on CD in the US: "Barry" (1980) and "Here Comes the Night" (1982). Even better would be HCTN with the two extra songs from his "Oh, Julie!" EP that didn't make it to the LP. (Of the four songs on the EP, two made it to HCTN and two didn't.)

I'd like to see Grace Jones' albums carefully remastered and expanded. Not brickwalled.

And it would be nice if Flunks albums were back in print so they'd be affordable.

RS mentioned the 40th anniversary of Led Zeppelin's fourth album--another album hitting 40 next year is "Sticky Fingers" by the Stones. One wonders if Universal's merging of the ABKCO and post-1971 Stones catalog, as well as the recent vault excavation for the "Exile" deluxe edition, might pave the way for more such Stones deluxe editions.

I read an interview with Don Was where he mentioned he was working on a "Some Girls" Super Deluxe edition, so perhaps we will see more Stones

I would like to see a volume 2 of the excellent CHIC Organisation box set released.
I'd also like to see remasters of the Island albums by Grace Jones, more Rick James, "Diana Ross" (1976) and "Baby It's Me" by Ms Ross, the SOS Band not just on DD but on CD as well and finally some compilations or full re-releases on Motown by High Inergy, Tata Vega and Billy Preston. Lots of Universal product, so I hope Harry Weinger is reading this 🙂

Ditto on the Grace Jones, starting with the Tom Moulton albums; The Waitresses, as suggested by IMWAN; early Prince; Vanity 6 (including 12" versions and the notorious "Vibrator"); The B-52's, at least the early albums. I've always wanted to hear the full "Mesopotamia" that scared the sh*t out of WB; Go-Go's "Beauty and the Beat," to include all of the Stiff recordings and the "Totally Go-Go's" concert film as a dvd extra; the once-promised expanded "Eden" from Everything but the Girl; and Emmylou Harris's "Evangeline," never on cd anywhere.

Regarding the Grace Jones, a couple of reissue labels have approached Universal in the past year about licensing "Fame" and "Muse" and have been turned down flat. Maybe something IS going on.

I'm still waiting for a 2-CD Deluxe Edition of Tears for Fears' "Seeds of Love" album.

As has been discussed here, Phil Collins' albums deserve the "expanded and remastered" treatment. His Motown album was surprisingly well-received, so maybe the renewed interest will compel Rhino to revisit the back catalog?

After doing such an awesome job on the reissues of the first two a-ha albums in 2010, I'd love to see Rhino do the rest of their catalog. It'll never happen, though.

    And in the rumored-but-not-confirmed category:

Peter Gabriel's "So" is supposedly getting the 2-CD treatment in 2011... can't wait for that, and I'd love to see his other albums get the same treatment.

The next two reissues in U2's catalog are supposedly "Achtung Baby" and "Rattle and Hum." I'm hoping to see those in 2011 as well.

It was mentioned that Phil Collins "Face Value" is getting the Steve Hoffman treatment (It's up for pre-order). Had been my expirience that once an album gets the Mo-Fi or DCC (or whatever it is called these days) treatment that a remaster campaign follows shortly after.

Another round of Dylan remastered reissues, specifically the unloved eighties ones: Empire Burlesque, Shot Of Love, Saved, etc. and the lone nineties original Under The Red Sky. I have them on vinyl but I miss the convenience of cd. They don't need to have bonus tracks as The Bootleg Series seems to be covering that and none of the other remasters have ever had them.

Reissues: A Partridge Family rarities collection, Buckingham/Nicks, unreleased or rare songs on the Billy Joel, Paul Simon and Paul McCartney reissues, a Tears For Fears box set with rarities and unreleased tracks, and a reissue of Joe Jackson's complete catalog.

I'm not holding my breath on Prince remasters & reissues if u have noticed his catalog titles are basically out of print and if u can find them grab em.

I'd like to see a deluxe edition of janet jackson catalog from a&m esp with her hitting the road in 2011. Control def needs the special edition treatmeant.

I'd like to see a proper Wham! UK Hits package. Sade boxset, DeBarge catalog back on cd.

The word I've always heard as far as either PE or Licensed to Ill is concerned comes down to sample clearance. Which sucks, because they both deserve deluxe treatment.

Based on a few things I've heard at least one of those titles you suggested in the last comment might actually happen...

Well Capitol has basically remastered and reissued 2 cd sets of The Beastie Boys discography samples and all. So there has to more than sample clearance issues
