Can't Seem to Get My Mind Off of You: Go-Go's Reissues Coming to U.K.

February 23, 2016 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

Go-Go's - Beauty and the BeatFollowing a successful run of reissues for Belinda Carlisle (including two waves of album expansions, a compilation and a singles box set), Edsel Records is now turning toward the band that first made her famous, planning deluxe editions of all three albums by The Go-Go's in March.

Formed in the nascent Los Angeles punk scene and soon crystallizing their sound into the rising tide of New Wave, The Go-Go's--vocalist Carlisle, guitarist/keyboardist Charlotte Caffey, rhythm guitarist Jane Wiedlin, bassist Kathy Valentine and drummer Gina Schock--made music history by becoming the first self-written, self-performed female act to top the Billboard 200. Debut album Beauty and the Beat had no shortage of sweetness or edge, with "Our Lips Are Sealed" reaching the Top 20 of the Billboard charts and "We Got the Beat" peaking at No. 2 in America.

Go-Go's - VacationThe group would ultimately dissolve after drug problems and infighting, but not before offering two more solid albums: 1982's Vacation, featuring the Top 10 title track, and 1984's Talk Show, with the infectious tunes "Head Over Heels" and "Turn to You." The band reconvened for three tracks on the excellent career-spanning compilation Return to the Valley of The Go-Go's in 1994 and independently released fourth album God Bless The Go-Go's in 2001, sporadically touring through the late '90s and '00s; bassist Valentine left the band in 2013 amid financial difficulties that were ultimately settled out of court.

Go-Go's - Talk ShowWhile this renewed activity seems to be the last for The Go-Go's--Wiedlin noted in a lengthy blog post earlier this month that dates were being planned for a farewell tour in 2016 (a 2010 farewell tour was canceled after Wiedlin suffered a knee injury)--they're at least going back out on CD in style, with deluxe editions of Beauty and the Beat, Vacation and Talk Show all prepared. Each album features bonus material (Beauty and the Beat is a double-disc set), all housed in digipaks with new liner notes featuring interviews from Carlisle, Caffey and Wiedlin.

While none of the bonus material here is unreleased, these reissues do serve to pair the respective material from Return to the Valley of The Go-Go's up with their original albums. Beyond that, extra bonus material includes the live bonus disc from EMI's 30th anniversary reissue of Beauty and the Beat, plus a re-recording of the band's cover of "Cool Jerk" by The Capitols, first released on a 1990 greatest hits compilation.

You can own all three reissues when they're released on March 25. Full details are below!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Not sure of the value of these releases if you have the Return To The Valley Of..... set.

I agree. I have the remasters of all three albums, plus "Return . . .," so this doesn't hold much interest for me. For those who don't have any of the albums, this might be big news, though. I wonder what the mastering is going to be like, given Edsel's less-than-stellar reputation in that regard.
