When Rhino released Q: The Musical Biography of Quincy Jones - a 4CD, 74-track collection - in 2001, it was a valiant attempt to tell a story that was still being written. The gifted bandleader, composer and producer, who passed away at the age of 91 in 2024, had an enduring way with sound, be it jazz, pop, R&B, rock or even film and television scoring. His decades of work with the 20th century's greatest luminaries made him a tremendous (if controversial) raconteur, with countless stories to tell and luminaries to work alongside.
Now, a new attempt to anthologize and memorialize the work of Q comes from a slightly unexpected direction: a new 20CD box set devoted primarily to his film scoring work, coming from Decca Records' French series Écoutez Le Cinéma. Produced by Stéphane Lerouge, The Legacy of Quincy Jones adds to a series of heavy-duty boxes for luminaries of cinema's sound, including Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schifrin and John Williams. Like those sets, it includes a wide berth of soundtracks, albums and standout tracks from multiple licensors, housed in a landscape-arranged, perfect-bound digibook with a 44-page booklet of liner notes offering interviews with Jones, discographical information, and photos.
Despite placing Jones' cinematic work in proper context, the set is only less than halfway comprised of soundtrack work. The Legacy of Quincy Jones starts with four discs offering eight albums Jones recorded as a bandleader between 1957 and 1962. A former trumpeter for the likes of Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie, Jones expanded the horizons of big band jazz at home and abroad, recording albums for ABC-Paramount (This is How I Feel About Jazz, Go West, Man!), Eddie Barclay's eponymous French label (Et Voilà !, Confetti), Impulse! (The Quintessence) and, of course, Mercury, the label he'd serve as its first Black vice-president (The Birth of a Band, The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones, and Big Band Bossa Nova, whose de facto title track "Soul Bossa Nova" is known to current generations as the swingin' theme to Mike Myers' comedic secret agent Austin Powers). The Barclay material is presented with an alternate arrangement of "Numero 13" as a bonus track.
The box then delves headfirst into two decades' worth of Jones' soundtrack albums. You'll hear complete LP or EP presentations from The Boy in the Tree (1961), The Pawnbroker (1965), Mirage (1965), The Slender Thread (1966), Walk, Don't Run (1966), The Deadly Affair (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967), the Oscar-nominated In Cold Blood (1967), For Love of Ivy (1968), McKenna's Gold (1969), The Italian Job (1969), The Lost Man (1969) and $ (1971), along with selections of varying length from the scores to Banning (1967), A Dandy in Aspic (1968), The Split (1968), Cactus Flower (1969), John & Mary (1970), The Out-of-Towners (1970), They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1970), The Anderson Tapes (1971), The Hot Rock (1972 - making its CD debut), The Getaway (1972), the Emmy-winning 1977 miniseries Roots, The Wiz (1978) and The Color Purple (1985). Beyond his score work, you'll hear collaborations with extraordinary vocalists including Sarah Vaughan, Astrud Gilberto, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, B.B. King, José Feliciano, Little Richard, Roberta Flack, Billy Preston, Diana Ross and more.
After that dive - a considerable build on what was featured in Écoutez's 6CD set The Cinema of Quincy Jones in 2016 - the package takes listeners through eight of Jones' bandleading albums for A&M Records: Walking in Space (1969), Gula Matari (1970), Smackwater Jack (1971 - featuring the theme to the TV series Ironside), You've Got It Bad Girl (1973 - offering the classic "The Streetbeater" from the NBC sitcom Sanford & Son), Body Heat (1974), Mellow Madness (1975), Sounds...and Stuff Like That!! (1978) and The Dude (1981), the last of which was an enduring predecessor to Quincy's pop production for Michael Jackson throughout the rest of the decade. The Legacy of Quincy Jones closes with two more complete albums - the star-studded, genre-hopping Back on the Block (1989) and Q's Jook Joint (1995) - before settling in with a 19-track summary of covers and collaborations by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Lou Rawls, The Brothers Johnson and rappers Snoop Dogg and Talib Kweli. It all wraps up with Jones' final studio session: a read on Henry Mancini's classic theme to Peter Gunn that Jones conducted with such luminaries sitting session as John Williams, Herbie Hancock and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.
Quincy Jones' music was as multifaceted as his life was, and Écoutez Le Cinéma: The Legacy of Quincy Jones is poised to be the most comprehensive look at that singular career on the market.
